Whilst double clicking an .avi-file I got following error:

Error: Media Center cannot dispaly visualizations for this file type.
Visualisations are only available for internal supported file types
(mp3, ogg, wave, ape, etc.)

In "Options" .avi is tagged.

I found only one thread with the same subject, but '0' replies...

How to solve this problem??

Thank you.

AVI files can contain audio or video and it's hard sometimes for MC to guess.

It also may make a difference whether you have told MC to use WMP for video playback or not.  It's an option you can set.

In the past I never had problems with .avi's
WMP ?
I donot see .wmp in the association list, but I tagged all the others.
Under "Playback" "Video" I tagged "Use Windows Media Player"

Double clicking that - I get  a black screen and I saw "Downloading.. "
something flashing.

Actually I donot want WMP player, because I have MC...

How to install codecs?

Installed WMP Codecs.
The error MC reports - had to run MC a couple of times - it says:
Error downloading media codecs.

Under "Playback" "Video" I tagged "Use Windows Media Player"
Try changing that.

What do you want to install?  Why?

Do you know if the AVI file is audio?  Video?

Does MC agree on the media type?  You can change it in properties.

WMP: by default it was not checked, resulting in the "Media Center cannot display ..."
error.

I checked it: black screen - download errror flashing by

I simply want to play an .avi-file.

Is the AVI file audio?  Or video?

Where does MC put it in the library?  Audio?  Or video?

Sorry, it is video.

I usually doubleclick it using Explorer and MC will start to play the file.

Try importing it and see if MC puts it under audio or video.  MC has to guess or assume.  There is no way to know.

The following may or may not apply to this case, but anyway, FYI:

AVI is a container file type defined by Microsoft. The abbreviation comes from Audio Video Interchange format. AVI can include video and audio compressed with various codecs.

The .avi extension doesn't tell what format the contents are. It depends on the program and the codecs that were used in making the file. MC needs the appropriate codecs installed in the operating system. Windows has some preinstalled codecs, some programs install additional codecs and the user can install more codecs if needed. Some of them have price tags (usually those included with programs), but many of the commonly needed codecs are available for free.

GSpot is a free tool that can tell what codes are needed if any: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/gspot.cfm

These sites offer more information and codec downloads:
www.afterdawn.com
www.doom9.org

I have written about AVI and the container system in general earlier in these threads:

GSpot is an information tool. It doesn't change anything.

Does G-Spot say in Video > Codec > Stat that compatible codecs are installed?

Can GSpot render the video? (Click the "Render" button in GSpot window.)

Check this in MC: Action Window > File Properties > Tag Info > Media Type. If it is Audio correct it to Video.

Yes it is, however,it shows the button like on yr desktop, i.e. the one like in the left top
corner of this site.

When double clicking it says error downloading codecs.

and a pop-up window saying:
"
Media Center encountered problems while trying to play the last several files.
Unknown media error.
Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location.
"

I unstalled MC again, but that did not help...

Under 'Video" it indeed says:
Codec: Xvid   - Name Xvid
Stat: Codec(s) are Installed  MPG4 is green

When render it says a lot of difficult things, like failed to connect output pin 0x00b41b54
("stream oo") on AVI splitter to input pin 0x00b3fc6c ("Xform in") on filter 0x0255a85a
("Divx Decoder Filter") . ConnectDirect()  failed. Error 0x80040207. There is no common
media type between these pins.

(yeah yeah... ?)

Glad you got it working. I was about to post this answer, but perhaps it's useful for others:

("stream oo") on AVI splitter to input pin 0x00b3fc6c ("Xform in") on filter 0x0255a85a

You have a codec problem. It should say this:

"Rendering succesful. (click for details...)"

and in details something like this:

Quote
DirectShow claims to be able to play the file. The following combination of filters were used:

 {E:\Video\Testvideo.XviD.AC3.avi} (Source)
 {AVI Splitter} (Splitter)

 {DivX Decoder Filter} (Video Decoder)
 {DirectVobSub (auto-loading version)} (Video Post-processor)
 {Video Renderer} (Video Renderer)

 {AC3Filter} (Audio Decoder)
 {Morgan Stream Switcher} (Audio Post-processor)
 {Default DirectSound Device} (Audio Renderer)

You could install this codec pack. It should help:

Just wonder.....
In the past, when doing a fresh install, I used to install this DivX as well (v.5.04).
However, while I want to keep my pc as clean as possible, lateron I skipped installing it.
I never encountered any playback problems sofar: I doubleclicked the file and MC would
always play the file.
Cud it be that coincidentally I never had to playbackany divx-files ?
(as otherwise the problem wud hv popped up earlier)
Why not include DivX codec alongwith the MC-installation?

An independent commercial company makes DivX. I doubt it will be included in the MC installer.

It is only one of the codecs that can be used for decompressing certain video formats and it doesn't handle splitting the container formats and decoding various audio formats (like Dolby Digital, DTS and Ogg Vorbis). They need separate codecs. At this time there is no well-established standards and there are a lot of different codecs that are used.

Generally, if you made the file by yourself you should know what codecs are needed or if someone else published the video file that information should be included.
