Has anyone tried the new iPod Nano yet? It looks great. I wonder if it will work with MC...?

I was referring to the minuscule Nano. My comment was based on the same issue affecting the Shuffle. If i could count on selling either of those in a cpl of yrs to get the latest and greatest fine, else

And As For Batteries....

I had one of the old 30GB models and after the battery died I bought a DIY replacement kit - cost SGD55 (about USD35). And now my old work horse lasts for a good 6 hours.

However, the nano is a fashion accessory. So by the time the battery dies, there will no dout be a new one !!

I doubt that battery could be replaced DIY.

Apple expects you to junk it (when it dies) and buy a new one ?

$150 for a 4Gb model

Chicken... I replaced my battery DIY and it was too easy. After all the hullabaloo about how difficult to open the case, it took me at least 10 seconds. Changing the battery took another 30 seconds and it was doing its initial charge within the minute.

So Nano finally arrived...

Started MC, plugged in Nano, WinXP burbled away, recognised the device and suggested a re-boot ( which I ignored ). Copied an album to the Nano, Ejected it and clicked Music on the dinky little click wheel. Nothing showed. Argghhh, I thought.

Then I remembered about initialising. So plugged the Nano back in and clicked Initialise. Copied another album and there it is - all working.

Two things worth noting (so far):-
First is that the sound quality so MUCH better than previous iPods. Really rich and vibrant.
Second is that the cover art doesn't seem to show-up. But then, that's no surprise with MC at the moment.

And in case anyone failed to notice - IT IS ABSOLUTELY uber cool. All we need now is the next generation of memory density. I think I have found the issue about cover art - but need to do some more experimentation. Will report later.

OK - sorry to report this, but cover art DOESN't work with MC. Two things to note...

First is that MP3's with embedded cover art do not work. If you use iTunes, you still will not see the cover art (unless the MP3 was created in iTunes). So if you Add a Folder to iTunes, re-add the cover art, then synchronise with your Nano - YES you will see the cover art.

I added one album with correct cover art and see the following:-

The cover art is stored on the Nano in iPod_Control\Artwork
with the form:-
F1031_1.ithmb (this one is the very small image which you see beside the Now Playing)
F1027_1.ithmb (this one is the larger image that you can see with the select button)
and it looks like the cover art database (in the same folder) is ArtworkDB.

I have to agree. I'm stuck using iTunes to synch my Nano. MC (11.0.314) crashes every time I connect it. Having to go back and re-add cover art to all the files I add to iTunes after already adding them in MC is a pain.

11.1 will not fix the cover art issue yet. Work is being done in this area now and it will be resolved.

When I change a rating on the Nano, it does not synch with MC (i.e., the rating never shows up in MC) - do I have a setting wrong? (It seems to work with the 3G 40GB iPod)

You must select the option for 'Sync data to PC' for this to work. It is found in Tools->Options->Handheld.

It depends what version of firmware is on the iPod, MC 11.0.xxx does not sync ratings for me since I upgraded my iPod to 2005-09-06. That's why I tried MC 11.1 alpha, but that was more of a disaster...

I think the setting (in 11.0.314 - I'll try to find 11.1) was "synch data to MC." I had tried it both ways and it had not worked.

I (eventually) got around to joining the ipod revolution last week when I received a present of a beautiful little white 4GB Nano.

- 5 days converting 500 cds to MP3 at 320k
- 5 minutes deciding I didnt like iTunes holding my hand and controlling everything
- 2 days researching mediaMonkey, WMP, Musicmatch, etc etc before deciding that Mediamonkey was just what i needed.
- 5 minutes discovering that MediaMonkey didnt work with my Nano at all. Back to iTunes.
- 1 hour of final futile googling before discovering JRiver . . .oh joy! Even better than MediaMonkey! What a great app . . just what i need . . AND it syncs with my nano (after some initial rebooting and resetting) but wait . .whats this . .no cover art!!! DOH! back to ITunes . . sigh.

(11.0.316 downloaded today). Mediamonkey are promising cover art 'in a few days' . . I am very keen not to use iTunes. Fingers crossed you can sort this one.

Funny story!

A lot of work is currently underway for iPod and other devices in MC 11.1. That's the one you should now try. It's in a thread here on this board.

As far as I know, it still doesn't do cover art, but ...

I am trying to get my Ipod nano to load music files, but when I check the download, when I scroll music-artist-there is no artist only the song name, Im sure it has something to do with tags, but not sure same issue w/ albums- then right to song, same issue w/ genre. Can someone help, Ive been working to fix this for days.

Can you tell us a bit about your Nano (firmware, model, etc.)? Make sure you are running the latest firmware and the latest build of Media Center.
