Tags not saved to jpg files
« on: March 15, 2006, 06:49:59 am »

Hi, I just took a trip to the South of France and snapped just over 800 pics (I often take way too many pics...it's an addiction).

Over the course of the holiday, each night I'd import all the pictures into MC11.1.144 and tag them in my usual way - People, Places and Events.

I did this on my laptop of course as I was on the road. Now back home, I've just copied all 800+ files over to my desktop PC, and imported into the copy of MC that runs there - MC 11.1.145 - expecting the tags to be intact.

Much to my disapointment, the pics came in without the MC tags of People, Places and Events. Is this normal?

For info, "Update tags when file info changes" is enabled.

Just to be sure, I went back to my Laptop and selected all the files, ran "Library Tools/Update Tags from Library", and tried again...still no tags in the copied files.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It would be great if I didn't have to re-tag all these files again.

From MC Help:

"Images

All tags can be saved to jpg files, and can be viewed exclusively in Media Center."

Thanks,
Kwake

Tags are saved in the jpg file header.  I don't know why it isn't working for you.

Can you see the tags in properties?  Select a file, go to file properties and "display".

Hi Jim,

When you say 'display', do you mean within MC 11.1? Or in the Windows File Explorer? In Windows explorer the MC tags aren't showing (which I expect is normal).

Within MC 11.1, here is what's happening:

On the laptop where I tagged People/Places/Events:

Action Window/File Properties/Tag Info: People/Places/Events are showing as I entered them.
Action Window/File Properties/File Type Info: EXIF data showing + MJMD Tag: <none> (does this mean anything)?

On the PC where I copied the tagged laptop files onto:

Action Window/File Properties/Tag Info: Nothing in the People/Places/Events fields.
Action Window/File Properties/File Type Info: EXIF data showing + MJMD Tag: <none>

Is there another way to check the files outside of MC to see if the People/Places/Events fields are being filled in the .jpg header?

Thanks,

Explore File Properties in MC a little more.  You'll find it.

Action Window / File Properties / File Type shows the physical file tags.

The MMJD part should contain information like this:

Quote
970 x 970 - 125.5 KB

MJMD Tag: v1.0 (754 bytes - APPID 9)
   <MJMD>
   <Name>Press photo 4</Name>
   <Genre>Art</Genre>
   <Date>38353</Date>
   <Tool_Name>Media Center</Tool_Name>
   <Tool_Version>11.1.144</Tool_Version>
   <Comment>Tag test</Comment>
   <Artist>Rammstein</Artist>
   <Album>Rosenrot</Album>
   </MJMD>

I just added the <Comment> tag with MC11.1.144.

Hmm, OK that explains it then...thanks Alex.

On the laptop where I tagged the pics, it still shows MJMD Tag: <none> for all images, even though People/Places/Events are filled in.

I had expected that it would fill the MJMD Tags in when I chose to "Update Tags from Library". Am I correct that it should work this way? If so, it's not working as expected.

Any ideas on how to fix?

Thanks,

Is it possible your JPG files are read-only so the laptop couldn't save the tags?

I was about to ask the same question.

kwake,

Did you copy the image files from a CD? I think Windows 2000 and older make write protected files when they are copied from CDs.

Some other questions:

Are you sure you have enabled tag writing in General options and also in the field specific library options? (The fields you mentioned are probably allowed to write tags by default)

Or perhaps the file format has something that prevents tag writing. What camera you used? Could you upload a sample image somewhere and post a link here?

Does MC show any tags under MMJD? Could you paste a tag dump here? (Right-click the tag display > Copy to Clipboard)

- Files aren't set to Read Only (and never were)
- Camera is a Sony DSC-F828, transfered pics to laptop via USB Compact Flash reader
- All my other jpg's (~22000) show the MJMD Tags properly in the jpg file (via File Type Info)
- Only these latest 810 don't seem to want to accept the tag in the jpg header
- Tried checking/unchecking Read Only as test
- Can't get MC tags into jpg header either on Laptop or the PC copies of these files - no matter what I try
- They seem locked somehow but for no obvious reason (MC shows all is well, no error messages, etc.)

As requested, a link to a test picture (after having added People/Places/Event tags, and selecting "Update Tags from Library"):

Also a screenshot showing the File Type Info after performing the steps above:

It is a bug. I tried your file and another untagged file. MC couldn't tag them. MC cannot create new tags at all. Also, Remove Tags doesn't work. (11.1.144 and 11.1.145)

As test, I installed an MC build from a month ago. It has no problems with tagging:

Quote
2048 x 1536 - 1.4 MB
3.3.2006 18:15
SONY DSC-F828
ISO-64 - F/5.600 - 1/250 sec.
Focal Length: 14.300 mm
Metering: Matrix
Flash: No
Orientation: Normal
Exposure Program: Auto
Exposure Bias: 0.000

MJMD Tag: v1.0 (718 bytes - APPID 9)
   <MJMD>
   <Tool_Name>Media Center</Tool_Name>
   <Tool_Version>11.1.122</Tool_Version>
   <Date>38718</Date>
   <Name>DSC08257</Name>
   <Artist>kwake</Artist>
   <Album>testing...</Album>
   </MJMD>

As a workaround you could make a playlist of the images on your laptop and export the playlist in mpl format. Remove the imported images from your library on the desktop PC, move the image files to an identically named folder path with the images that are on the laptop and import the mpl playlist. MC will fill the library fields from the playlist data. After that you can use MC's tools for moving the images.

Thanks a million Alex for your help in reproducing the problem.

As for the workaround, I think I'll just wait out the next few builds as I'm pretty confident JRiver will probably be able to fix this quickly.

I'll keep checking the new builds and post if the problem continues to occur.

Merci beaucoup!
