CD burning stopped working

Trying again to get some help. Any assistance would really be appreciated.

My Media Jukebox 8 worked well until about a month ago, then began not completing the burning of cd's from less than 3 files to 97% of 30. (will not burn .wav or data cd's). Same brand of cd's as I've been using and was in the middle of a pack of Sony CD-R's).

Here are the 2 main error codes I receive:

A device error occurred. Error number is 1051
Error data is: KEY: 5 ASC: 21 ASCQ: 2

Error: "Test Unit Ready" command failed on device 1:1:0
unexpected TARGET error (04h 00h 04h)


I finally completely reformated my computer (wiped the disk and saved my files to an external drive)) reloaded only Windows XP and downloaded MJ8 (loaded and scanned with McAfee afterwords, and my computer was still clean). No change. Have tried (as suggested) MC 11. Still no change, it didn't finish a burn either. Have tried different length files and even some that burned on the programs below.  And the "test but not burn" completes fine and shows no error.

What is so frustrating is that Roxio CD Creator 5.0 Platinum, Windows Media Player 11 Beta, and Phatnoise Music Manager all easily and quickly (16x) burn cd's from the same mp3 files that MJ8 won't burn. I tried Phatnoise to confirm that the burner worked with another program.

This leads me to suspect the problem is with MJ8 (and MC11).
I want to keep MJ8; it does everything I want it to do (when it burns cd's correctly), and i've got over 8k files on it. But I've got a big stack of "coasters".

Please help.

Is there a seperate "burn test" for Media Jukebox 8? The one with Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum was normal.

yes in the burn settings

if i remember correctly there is a button that basically will refresh the burn drive to make sure mj sees the drive and the config is correct.

It is "DETECT", MJ8 detected. Got another coaster after it wrote 1 1/3 tracks.

Any more ideas. I've done about everything I can think of. BTW, MediaMonkey also downloaded without any problem and burned a cd just fine. Why won't MJ8 do it? It did it just fine a month ago.
I'm going to keep trying and if I can't find an answer, take it to a computer place Tuesday.

About the best I can figure is that the LG CD-R/RW GCE-8160B is probably at fault. My reseach has shown that it was designed for Windows 98, which has the first OS on this computer (since Wondows ME was my alternative choice at the time), and has caused a lot of problems with computers which were upgraded to XP.
Here are the driver installation instructions for Computers which are upgraded (ain't dis weird?):

Note: If you have Windows 2000, ME, or XP already installed, you will need to create a bootable disk from another PC that has an earlier operating system like DOS, Win95 or Win98 in order to process this firmware update. Follow the steps below. After the bootable disk is created and the files are extracted to the bootable disk, follow the steps starting at step 9.

1.  Place: A blank floppy diskette in your 3.5” disk drive A:
2.  Double-Click:  My Computer Icon on your desktop
3.  Right-Click: The drive letter that is the 3.5” drive.
4.  Choose : Format.
5.  Choose: Copy System Files Only, Click OK.
Let: The PC Make the disk bootable.
Copy: The GCE8160BfirmXP.EXE file to the floppy boot disk you just created
Click Start, then Run, then type  A: GCE8160BfirmXP.exe  to extract the files and choose yes to allow for files to be overwritten if you get a message asking if you want to overwrite the files.
 Re-Boot your PC with the bootable disk in Drive A: (Note: you may need to change your boot sequence in the CMOS Setup in order to boot to drive A. Please see your motherboard manual for instructions or contact your PC manufacture for instructions on changing the boot sequence.)

The driver should load and the system should recognize your rewriteable
CD-ROM  drive.

10.  At the A:> prompt  type JE1.EXE  JE1LG912.HEX  then  press     enter.

The computer will scan your system to detect the drive. You will then be prompted to perform the upgrade.  This process takes about 4 minutes. There
Are multiple stages to the upgrade process including checksum verification count to 100%.

IMPORTANT-  DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE DRIVE DURING THIS PROCESS.

11. When the UPGRADE is complete the screen should indicate FIRMWARE UPDATE SUCCESSFUL. Remove the bootable disk and Re-boot your PC.

Over time Lasers on CD drives/players etc often tend to burn out.
I've had this alot.  How long they last depends alot on the quality of the
laser used.  My parents have a CD Player from the early 80's which still works fine.
If you buy a portable discman they last about 10 minutes.
Computer drives (also car CD players) seem to last 4-6 years I've noticed,
 depending on how much you use them.

I'm not going on the error messages but if I had to take a wild
guess I'd say your drives come to the end of it's life.
Could be something totally different...
Even if it's not the laser though, bare in mind that manufacturers
sadly make/design hardware to last a specific amount of time,
and now a days with electronics equipment it's getting less and less.

You can pick up replacement drives for about £20 (35$?) or less
quite easily...

Replacing the firmware probably won't do you any harm (Since it seems it's already broken)
However you need to make sure it's definitley for the right drive model,
and from a repuatable source if possible.  Decent firmware should
never allow itself to be installed on the wrong drive anyhow, but it's a good idea to check
since there is an amazing amount of bad software out there...

Some people are tempted to try those little CD's with brushes on the bottom
to "Clean" the lens.  They don't work, they cause damage.
I know a friend who has a £500 DJ Dual CD player
which was wrecked by one of these, cost £150 to put it right again.

As for why it's only not working with MC/MJ I had a drive that was doing exactly this
and it was just the tip of the iceburg... over time everything started making coasters.
Possibly MC/MJ are not as persistant in this area as the others... who knows?

After a lot of searching, and reading  comments for others, I found that this problem is not unusual. The LG GCE-8160B CD-R/RW Drive  has been a problem on computers upgraded to Windows XP (among others). The solution for me was:

go to this site and click product support, and device driver, I found the CGE-8160B on the 5th page at the top the latest firmware etc. This is only for LG drives.
Downloaded and installed it, had my MJ8 CD Writer screen (under options) 'DETECT' it.
Then burned 3 cd's in a row, one with 30 tracks (77+ minutes) at 16x. 
Isn't this something to be added to the MJ8 database?
