Hello John,

Here is the new topic you asked for and the status screen of the UPNP Server. MP3s seem to be fine. But not APEs, which is the format all my ripped CDs are in.

At this point the MP101 shows the standard playback text but the time counter stays at "00:00"

Altrough the computer that is running MC 12, has not changed, since I upgraded from MC 11 (Which worked great) here are the basic computer specs:

Pentium D 3.0Ghz
4GB DDR 2 System RAM
Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2
36GB SCSI Drive (OS/APPs, including MC)
36GB SCSI Drive (DATA)
160GB drive for MP3s files
300GB drive for APEs files
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Sound Card

In UPnP Server Options, check that "Convert if necessary" is selected.

Have you changed the coverter in any way? Try converting a file and playing the converted file in MC, does that work?

I have tried both 'Convert if Necessary' and 'Always convert Audio' With the same results, APEs will not play.

Ok, I converted the AC/DC - Hells Bells APE, to MP3, using the same setting that I have the UPNP server set to... CBR/ABR Encoding - 320 kpbs. The original APE and Converted mp3 plays fine in MC 12.

MC 11 was working great, I don't know why 12 is not.

ok... as a quick test. I shutdown MC 12 and ran MC 11, which i have installed on the same system, different directory, build 11.1.201, UPNP server build 1.0.37. With the same converter settings, and APEs convert and play fine.

Do you have the "Restrict Encoder to constant bitrate" checked?

I double checked, I have the same settings as you (I don't have the "Restrict..." box checked).

Try some different encoder settings.

If that doesn't work, I'd try a complete un-install and re-install.

I'm puzzled...

OK, well I un-installed and re-installed MC 12, with the same results. But I do have a question.

What do the two bold lines mean in the above status log?? I ask, because those lines do not show up in MC 11, when playing the same APE file, and identical convertion settings.

Those are lines that give me clues about the logical path through the program. They are not in the MC11 version.
They are supposed to be there.

Did you try different conversion settings?

I did not try every possible combination, but I did try several... I will try some more this weekend.

Could Netremote/Media Bridge be causing a problem with MC12? I am not using the latest version of netremote, due the lack of the MC skin that ships with an earlier version. THe version i am using works fine with MC11 and seems to work with MC12.

I don't think NetRemote or Media Bridge could be causing problems, mostly because it works with MC11.

Do you have another computer you could test with?

The only other computer here is a Windows Vista Ultimate system, and well i did not want to throw Vista into the mix.

BUT..... I have found the issue...... I ripped a CD to APEs using MC12, and they convert and play fine with M12s UPNP server!!!

Apparently the convertion process does not like the APEs that i had using Easy CD-DA Extractor v10. Althrough MC 11 and 12 play them, and MC 11s UPNP server converts them ok.

Other than re-ripping 700+ CDs, what do you think can be done? I like Ripping with Easy CD-DA Extractor, and would like to continue using it.

Yeah.... i can get a file to you. Just tell me how to get you the file FTP, etc. Also, you can get a trial of Easy CD-DA Extractor v10 at http://www.poikosoft.com.

And this Applies to the NetGear MP101 also?

I can certainly do/try that, but that does not really explain why MC 12s UPNP server has an issue with the files, and MC 11s UPNP server does not have an issue.

Hello John,

Ok... Although I did not convert any files.... I bought two CDs today, so I ripped them at the 'Normal Compression level', and they did function properly in MC 12's UPNP server.

I do not look forward to converting all my APEs. Is it possible to copy the UPNP files from MC 11 for use by MC 12?

Or is there a more compatible/better quality lossless format?

Sorry about the DLink, I'd confused this with another problem I've been working on. I'll try the mp101 tomorrow. But the point remains - insane compression is insanely slow, no matter which device you are using.

It is not possible to use the MC11 UPnP server with MC12, sorry. There've been too many changes. I don't know why it works with MC11, but the interaction between client and server is complex.

APE is great, it's what I use at home, just at normal compression level. I'd imagine the conversion process shouldn't be too bad, you may be able to do it as a batch process somehow. Since it is lossless to lossless, it doesn't matter if you reconvert APE files at normal compression. Any heavy APE users have some hints?

I just took a look at the conversion problem - doesn't look bad at all. Just choose a view that lets you select all your APE files, right click, choose library tools->Convert Format, choose the ape encoder and set the compression to normal, and let it go. It'll take a while, but it'll do it.

OK... Guess I have my work cut out for me....

I figured the whole system is pretty complex and not much of a standard. But I was very happy when JRiver add the UPNP server to MC... the server software that came with the MP101 was terrible, and must have been based on some of the same componets as Microsoft's Media Palyer, of the time, as they both seemed to have the same issues with some tags...( not liking '/' in 'AC/DC' for example), and a slow database.

I tried the MP101 - the file is being sent okay, but the MP101 doesn't like that it is being sent so slowly for some reason.
I added a bit to the wiki about it.

It's easy to convert all your files, a couple of minutes setup and then walk away and let it crunch:
Click the arrow next to Audio to expand the audio organization tree.
Expand the File Type entry
Click on the ape subentry
Click any of your ape files
type <ctrl>-A to select them all.
Right click on an ape file
library tools->Convert Format
Make sure the converter is set to ape, normal compression
start it up and let it go.

I'd recommend trying just one or two first, before doing all of them.

Yeah... I started a convertion at midnight last night and average about 1 minute per track, and 6810 tracks to do.... about 4.7 days total time... good thing I have two systems.

I ripped two new CD at normal, and they did play with the UPNP server, so unless the convertion process does something different, I should be fine. But I will use about 6.5 gigs more of hard drive space.
