Media Center 12.0.189 Cannot Import ANYthing
« on: March 16, 2007, 03:41:48 pm »

I reported earlier on the general Media Center 12.0.189 (as well as threads for earlier releases) discussion that I have been unable to get Media Center to run properly on my Windows Vista machine. The program completely crashes if I attempt to import *anything* into the Library. Period.

It will crash if I attempt to import a *single* mp3, video...even a jpg. I have installed, uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, uninstalled, etc. etc. etc. at *least* ten times over the past few days and have tried every possible way to import media into the library--from importing via the initial import prompt to dragging and dropping first folders, and then individual files, onto the MC12 window...and every single time, no matter WHAT I do, Media Center 12 crashes.

None of the files I have attempted to import have been corrupted in any fashion. I have opened them *all* successfully in a variety of other applications, including Windows Media Player 11, WinAmp 5, and Xvid Player.

I have carefully tracked down and eliminated all remaining traces of MC12 after uninstall to ensure that there aren't any legacy files left behind which, upon reinstall, may cause problems. I have installed MC12 in several different completely new folders each time. Yet the problem remains.

I do have these problems with ANY other program on my computer...even 6-year-old freeware apps that I wouldn't suspect capable of even installing on Vista. I installed Media Center 12 on my laptop, which runs WinXP, and it functions perfectly fine. Pity I have absolutely no use for it on my laptop.

The only thing I have not done so far to see if I can jimmy MC12 into working is completely wipe my hard-drive, repartition and reformat it, and reinstall Windows Vista entirely to see if, perhaps, *that* does the trick--but I'm not about to go through all that hassle for one program.

I am completely perplexed by this. I do not *think* the problem could be the result of a bad registry entry--that might keep the program from launching at all, but I can't see how it would cause a complete crash upon importing any files. I do not know what to do further except request a refund, though that's the last thing I want to do, because I really, really liked this program...for the two or three days it worked while in beta.

How exactly do I do that? At this point, I have MC12 completely uninstalled on my system, but will gladly reinstall it, try a few different imports to make it crash, and then send you the log!  :)

I just discovered how to enable logging via the Help menu. I have MC12.0.189 reinstalled and, after enabling logging, have six times crashed it completely attempting to copy a single mp3 file into the library. For a brief moment, upon reinstalling, I managed to get a single folder of 13 mp3s to import into the library, but afterwards, once the program inevitably crashed, all of those imported files were gone. I enabled "debugging" information as well, so I hope that caught information from the crash.

However, my computer's Event Viewer *did* capture this following error:

"Faulting application Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.189.0, time stamp 0x45f20bce, faulting module nevideohd.ax, version 4.6.15.0, time stamp 0x459bb828, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00008b8d, process id 0x10ac, application start time 0x01c7683974bc2e4a."

And here is the XML dump from the same logged error:

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="Application Error" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID>

  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2007-03-17T02:11:49.000Z" />
  <EventRecordID>2184</EventRecordID>

  <Data>01c7683974bc2e4a</Data>
  </EventData>
  </Event>

I can't believe it took me this darn long to remember to check the Event Viewer, but I've discovered only *two* of the above errors (each the exact same, only the time code of the occurrence differing) logged over the past however-many days, both of them tonight since I reinstalled MC12.0.189.

Does any of this stuff make sense?  ?

Here are another two errors that I just found logged in my computer's Event Viewer:

"Faulting application Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.189.0, time stamp 0x45f20bce, faulting module JRTools.dll, version 12.0.283.0, time stamp 0x45f20b5d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00058f2d, process id 0x164c, application start time 0x01c76809563b6308."

And:

"Faulting application Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.189.0, time stamp 0x45f20bce, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00000000, process id 0x164c, application start time 0x01c76809563b6308."

(Wow, that one is *really* helpful, isn't it?)

I'm getting a similar type of thing on Vista, clean install of mc12
It scans the music directory but as soon as it starts to import the first song into my library it crashes

Faulting application Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.189.0, time stamp 0x45f20bce, faulting module nevideohd.ax, version 4.6.15.0, time stamp 0x459bb828, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00008b8d, process id 0x9e0, application start time 0x01c76a0a4ac1b12d.

My windows install is on E drive, music on H, if thats any help.

I'm guessing that nevideohd.ax is a (bad) Nero Directshow filter.  Try uinstalling Nero.

And Nero was the problem:

It seems as though my mysterious crashing-on-import problem with Media Center 12.0.x has been solved! The culprit, apparently, is a conflict with a bad Nero DirectShow filter.

I just uninstalled Nero 7 on my Vista machine, and MC12 works fine now: it imports any and all files (mp3s, videos, graphics, you name it) and plays/views them with no trouble whatsoever!

Hi Jim

Can confirm uninstalling NERO fixed this problem on my Vista installation as well.
Thanks for the follow up.
Now what to use for burning??

Cheers

Maybe you've heard of JRiver Media Center?

Just to add to this:

I could be simply missing some things in MC, but Nero is more "burning-centric" and appears to offer more features when it comes to burning.  Nero has a streamlined interface JUST for burning, and offers a handy "copy entire disc" option for audio or data CDs and DVDs that I don't see in MC (although, once again, maybe I'm just missing it.)  Nero also offers features like data verification, and it gives reports for the speeds it used when reading/writing, which is helpful for catching potentially problematic discs.  As I said -- Nero is just more "burning-centric" and it's considered one of the more reliable programs for burning.  I tend to trust it over other apps when making a disc for a client.

That said, if MC offered these other features, I would certainly consider switching to it for burning.  I definitely prefer MC for ripping -- I ONLY use Nero for burning.  Note that I'm using Nero 6, which apparently doesn't have any conflicts with MC.
