iPod video problem in 12.0.358
« on: October 27, 2007, 04:27:16 pm »

I am pretty disappointed that fixes for video to iPod are not there. I just installed .358 and tried to transfer a video. As soon as I pressed "Sync", I got an error box stating
Code: [Select]
ffmpeg.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.....
I would love to use MC to sync my iPod but it just doesn't work for me.

It may be a problem, but try finding the ffmpeg.exe file and deleting it.  Then do check for updates.  You may have an old version of it.

I removed ffmpeg.exe and ffmpeg.xml from my plugins directory then checked for updates. MC said there are no updates. My ffmpeg.exe filedate is 2/21/05 and I assume that MC installed it to the plugins directory.

I tried to resync the video and MC then downloaded ffmpeg again and once again, it (ffmpeg) immediately crashed. The filedate is still 2/21/05.

As you know, I have had quite a few problems with video and coverart getting trashed. As I haven't been able to transfer a video, I don't know if my coverart problems are fixed. I don't see any coverart fixes in the changelog.

Okay, I think that problem was related to that particular video file. I just tried another one and ffmpeg did not crash.

BUT.... the video does not work on the iPod. I get the green screen with noise in it and the the video immediately stops after that. Same as before.

The videos seem to convert and transfer okay but they do not play. On the iPod, it shows the correct video duration (35 secs) and it even shows a good thumbnail.

Try a search for ffmpeg.exe from Explorer to make sure you don't have two.

The xml file has a command line for ffmpeg conversions.  Try running it manually, then experimenting with the settings.

What iPod do you have?

I have a 80GB iPod Classic

I looked at the command line options for ffmpeg and I couldn't figure them out. But, like I said above, I think the problem was on my end with one particular video (although it plays fine on my computer). I've tried a couple of other files since and none have crashed ffmpeg.

But, like I also said above, none of the videos work. The one was encoded  as .wmv. Another attempt was a *.flv downloaded from Youtube. That one converted and transferred but I didn't see it on the iPod. After sorting the iPod in MC, I see that it converted the flv to an mp3 file. I found the file on the iPod under songs and it plays the audio of that video.

Did you check the conversion options you have set for iPod sync?

Settings are to convert to mp3 for audio and to Ipod native for video.

iPod video problem in 12.0.358-Troubleshooting
« Reply #9 on: October 28, 2007, 07:59:48 am »

I did a small bit of testing today. I used the same input file for each test, which was a 40 second home movie encoded to wmv by MS MovieMaker.

Test 1: I let MC convert and transfer the video. Result:  another ffmpeg.exe crash. This is a different video from yesterday's crash.

Test 2: I converted the video to .mp4 with a 3rd party utility then let MC transfer it with my standard handheld settings. MC reconverted the video and transferred it. Result: no ffmpeg crash but the video does not play on iPod. Green screen for a second then back to iPod menu.

Test 3: Change MC transfer setting to not convert video and let it transfer the same video as above that was converted outside MC. Result: Everything worked perfectly (except for having to use a 3rd party utility to do something MC should be doing)

The video converter I used was Amerisoft Video Converter that I obtained a while back from GiveAwayOfTheDay.com. I'll also add that with all these transfers, I have not seen any coverart problems like I was seeing before. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Test 4: I used the 3rd party video converter to convert the Youtube flv that failed yesterday. Result: worked perfectly. The third party correctly converted the flv to mp4 and it plays fine on the iPod. When I did the same yesterday, MC converted the flv video to an mp3 audio file.

We've spent some time recently on video conversion, and this should be working, so I'm glad he's reported the problem.

I split his post from the 358 build thread.

I have a iPod 5g 60 gig video iPod. I was able to get videos on it using the native iPod setting. But the audio is scrambled. One video which was a .flv got on to the ipod didn't play at all. I also have a 80 gig classic. The same videos I tried on it with th same settings. All videos came up on the iPod as 1 second in length. Some played the green screen for a second with scrambled audio. Just thought I'd try and shed some light on the situation.

Please do a "check for updates" and try the conversion again. The command line was messed up, and should work correctly in the update. Use the iPod Native setting.

Did the check for updates and MC downloaded new encoders. Now, every attempt to encode results in:

"None of the tracks can be transferred.
Common errors include insufficient rights or unsupported file types"

I tried several files in wmv format and one in flv.  All gave the same error.

I updated and now .flv's work perfectly. But the mpeg and mpgs dont. But now they display the correct duration for each video. When I attempt to play the mpgs a black screen comes up and the time stays at 0:00.

I apologize for my post above. I had forgot that I set my preferences to "no conversion" while troubleshooting yesterday.

Now that I set it back to Ipod Native I tried to transfer videos again. Results:
.flv worked perfectly. Thanks
.wmv resulted in ffmpeg.exe errors again. Tried 2 different ones with same result.

P.S. This is an example of why I made the feature request for the option to only convert unsupported files.

Bump.
Just wanted to say that as of 12.0.375, I still can not convert videos to the iPod. I continue to get the ffmpeg crashes.

Try removing ffmpeg and letting MC get it.

I tried that but after removing ffmpeg, MC just downloads it again and throws the same error.

Sorry about that, the video converter wasn't updated correctly on the server. Please try "check for updates" now and let us know if your conversion works ok.

Okay, I deleted ffmpeg and let MC download the new version. Now, when I try to transfer my videos, MC tells me
Code: [Select]
None of the tracks can be transferred.
Common errors include insufficient rights or unsupported file types

The file types are wmv and this is on XP logged in as admin. I've rebooted and tried again with same result. Before, I was at least able to start the transfer, now I can't even get that far.

Go into Tools/Options/Handheld and select "iPod Native" for the Video conversion format for your iPod. It sounds like this got unselected somehow.

It worked!  :D Thank you very much.

Yes, "Ipod Native" was not selected. That was my fault. I forgot I had turned it off when I was needing to use 3rd party utils to convert my videos.

Thanks again for the support.
