Author Topic: 13.0.172 not "recognizing" iPod on Win 7 [solved by rolling back to Vista]  (Read 7316 times)

I realize that dev is "done" on v13 but after several rock solid months using 13.0.x on Vista 32 and syncing my 80GB iPod Video happily...when I try to sync the very same iPod with the very same version of MC (13.0.172) on the very same computer - only with Windows 7 Pro installed...I now get:

"Your iPod could not be properly identified...blah blah 0,0".

I click OK on that and it pops up ready to sync as usual. And completely recognized correctly as an "Apple iPod Video". Not a huge deal - but there must be some rogue code somewhere causing this message to pop up...

Fixed in v14? Any ideas...?

Appreciate an update.

Cheers!

I'm not sure what this is.  I haven't seen this with Windows 7 and my iPod at home.

We'll test a few other Windows 7 machines to see if we can reproduce it.

Matt,

Thank you! I even "reinitialized" the iPod with no joy. Post back here if you find out anything - would love to get this solved....

Matt,

I got to thinking about another possible cause. Within a fresh Windows 7 environment - do you "introduce" the iPod hardware to the OS all by itself (without MC running) or do you fire up MC and then plug the unit in for the first time?

In my case - I installed Win 7 and all my apps (including MC) but never did actually plug the iPod into the system at any time prior to firing up MC. Of course Win7 goes thru some internal process of loading drivers of some sort since I did get some visual feedback via the system tray as soon as the iPod was recognized by the OS.

Perhaps this "introduction" is out of sequence...maybe the OS needs to load those "drivers" and get itself aligned properly prior to ever plugging it in while MC is up and running....?

Thoughts?

Cheers!

That's a good theory.  We tested another Windows 7 box and couldn't get the error.

Did Media Center only show the error once (before drivers), or does it show it each time you plug in the iPod (even though you have the drivers)?

So far - I get each and every time the iPod is plugged in (with MC up of course). What iPod are you testing with? Good to know that you are not getting the error - which tells me - there is probably something oddball going on here.

One more Q: Does the iPod need to be in a specific mode (like  "Disc Mode" or whatever it's called) - before any sort of usage with MC? I will have to test - but I think if my iPod is simply plugged in (without MC running)...the "do not disconnect" icon starts flashing away and I believe just sits like that - until I reset it.

Appreciate the updates!

Cheers!

I get this error now that I'm using the Windows 7 RTM rather than the Release Candidate.

Just wanted to add another data point to this.  I upgraded from 64-bit Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate last night, and I'm getting the same error in MC13 when I connect my iPod Classic:

Thinking that perhaps MC14 had better Win7 compatibility, I downloaded and installed it, but no joy - in fact, the above screen shot is from MC14.

I did not connect the iPod during the Windows upgrade process; the first time I connected it to Win7 was after firing up MC13.  I've rebooted at least once since this first occured, and both MC13 and MC14 give the error each time I plug it in.

Try rebooting.  MC14 will automatically run a service that is needed for some devices with Win7.

I still get the popup after rebooting.  I'm also using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Besides getting this popup, Media Center appears to function normally with my iPod.

This must be a RTM change, because we haven't been able to reproduce it on earlier Windows 7 builds.

We're investigating.

Thanks, Jim.  Unfortunately, as I mentioned, I've rebooted at least once and the problem persists.

Great.  Thanks.  Is there any extra tracing or logging that I can turn on when I get home this evening that might help?

Could someone attach a log file? Start MC, make sure all of the logging is turned on, reset the log, plug in the ipod, wait for the message, view the current log, save it as something and attach it here. Thanks...

Let me know how to attach a file and I will. In the meantime here is last part of the log that deals with the ipod:

This is an 80Gb iPod Classic that used to be recognized just fine in XP. Now I am running Win7 Ultimate x64 RTM.

Just an update - instead of messing around with a full blown v14 test environment - I just rolled back to Vista SP2 and everything is back to normal. V13.0.172 is rock solid - with no errors or issues.

Will consider v14 in a couple months - at least sometime past Oct 22 so full Windows 7 compatibility is assured.

I just purchased a Nano which is showing the same symptoms of not being recognized. The difference is that I am on Win XP and Vista using both MC 13 and 14.  I have a 4th and 5th generation iPod that work fine, but it fails to identify the Nano.

Did a google search as recommended, but all I found were problems dealing with Windows or iTunes not recognizing it. That is not my situation. The Nano is recognized by Windows and iTunes. it even shows up under devices->my computer in MC 13 and 14, but is not as a device that I can send media files to.

I went as far as trying some of Apple's suggestions to reset the Nano, reinstalling iTunes, etc.. but it is still not recognized as a device in MC.
