NEW: Volume Protection
« on: June 09, 2011, 10:58:36 am »

Media Center 16.0.108 adds an option 'Volume Protection' to the volume menu.

It does three things:

1) Makes it so that it isn't possible to increase the volume by more than 5% at a time (so accidentally clicking 100% on the slider will not go to 100%)

2) Makes it so that the volume can not be increased by more than 20% a second

3) Makes it so that starting playback if nothing has played for 30 minutes sets the volume to 10% (unless the volume is already lower)

This option is useful when you're connected to an amplifier where you keep the volume high and use Media Center as the volume.  In these cases 100% volume in Media Center may be extremely loud, so protections to make sure you don't hear full volume unexpectedly are useful.

Thanks very much for making it an option too, as I can see different set-ups in the same home needing this feature either on or off.

This looks like a nice feature. I wonder if adding a "ramp volume back up after mute/unmute or pause" might also be of any benefit. When listening at loud volumes and pausing for a snack/bathroom break/phone call etc. it can seem too loud when you hit play again. Maybe ramping up the volume over a second or so would help.

Can you make it so it plays louder when someone tries to talk during the movie?  ;D It would be like the Auto Volume in my Suburban that increases the volume when you drive faster since there is more wind/tire noise.

Can this 'volume protection' be disabled. If Yes how do it do it.

Thanks

A few times in the past I have started a video and the volume began at something around 80%. I'm fairly certain that the volume was not left at this high level at previous shutdown. We haven't been using video in MC lately so don't know if this may still be a problem. Has it happened to anyone else?

Since many of us are now running straight to power amps this can be a speaker, and/or ear breaker. It might be helpful to have a setting for max volume percent at start of play. For those that don't want their high volume being lowered they could just set it at 100%.

Thanks,
Rod

Volume Protection does this (#3 above).

As Jim mentioned, you can enable volume protection, per-zone, in the volume menu.

Thanks Matt - I guess on my 70th birthday I'm still learning this reading thing. Obviously not there yet!

Nice additional features.
