Does MC17 write Replay Gain TRACK tag?
« on: May 09, 2012, 10:37:46 pm »

Hi.  I have MC17 set to Analyze Audio on import.... so every track has a value appear in the Replay Gain column.  However, does MC17 actually write this track value to the file tag?  The reason I ask is that I just checked a bunch of recently added files and none of them had Replay Gain tags and I am very confused.

Thank you.

Do you have tag writing enabled?

You can see which tags are in the files by using the Tag Dump.  Click the first line of the Tag Action Window when one file is selected.

this is interesting.
Ok, so I highlight one of my tracks and go into the Tag Action Window...

if I select "Show All Tags" I do see Replay Gain and a value
if I select "Show Tags in Current View" I do see Replay Gain and a value
however, if I then select "Show Tags with Values" then I do NOT see Replay Gain
and... if I look at file properties from Windows Explorer using dbPoweramp context plug in tab, it shows me a Replay Gain value

What does that mean?

Show Tags with Values restricts the list to fields editable by the user, and excludes media attributes determined automatically.

Click the first line of the Tag Action Window when one file is selected.

You really need Alex B to comment about the root question.

He'll know exactly what MC writes to the file tags and probably why.

And what the developers were thinking when they made the change.

What change? ?

I understand why [Album Gain] isn't written to file tags, but the question is about [Replay Gain]—which is written to my file tags.

I think JimH might have meant the Tag Dump hidden click line change.  Too hard for users to discover this is the location to find their physical tags.

Ah-hah!  Special thanks to Rick.ca for showing me where to click.  Ok, so I can CLEARLY now see which of my tracks have ReplayGain values written into the tag and which do not.

I now return to my CORE ISSUE which is:  WHY do so many of my tracks NOT have ReplayGain values written?  In fact, I can be more specific about any album I've added to my collection over the last few months.... any CD I've ripped myself using dbPoweramp, any album I've purchased and downloaded from Beatport, any album I've purchased from HD Tracks.... none of the tracks have ReplayGain values written.

In my prior post I included screenshots to show the settings I have configured....

Can anyone tell me why MC17, which Analyzes Audio for every track in my collection and shows a ReplayGain value in the primary view, is NOT writing ReplayGain values to the files?

Maybe you had tag writing off when those values were calculated.  In that case, MC will not push those tags into the files until either manually told to do so -- Update tags (from Library) -- or until some other property or tag change within the file causes Auto-Import to update the file's tags.

so I've added MANY albums in the last X weeks, and I have not made ANY changes from the settings I included via screen shot.  that's why I don't understand...

Although I would think you'd want that selected, I don't know why it would have any bearing on MC writing [Replay Gain] after analyzing a file.

Is the tag written when you Update Tags (from Library)?

if I manually execute Update Tags from Library, then yes, the tags are written.

Hmm. I suppose the next thing to try is (yet again) some new imports—to see if the issue persists. Rip one album with dbPoweramp and another with MC—to see if it has something to do with the tags written by other applications. :-\

So I just bought a bunch of tracks... some m4a, some FLAC, some mp3... they all get imported into my MC library, and they automatically get Analyzed.  BUT... not a single one of them has a tag written for Replaygain.  Of course, if I highlighted them and right clicked thru Library Tools--> Update Tags from library-- that would write the tags no problem.  The issue is ReplayGain tags are not being written automatically upon analysis.

What are the trouble shooting steps here?
What could be the possible cause of this?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding, but based upon my reading of the discussion, it seems no troubleshooting is required. MC17 is working as designed (whatever one's feeling on the matter) by not writing the tags when they are generated by auto-analysis upon importing files. If you want the tags written, you can run the analyze audio step manually when importing files, or do what you're doing now and updating tags from library.

(Personally, I do side with those who think that MC should write the RG tags to the file when one chooses the "analyze on import" option.)
