Automatic Zone Selection for Movies and Music
« on: June 08, 2012, 05:05:01 pm »

There have been many requests over the years for the ability to automatically select/change DSP settings based on a sources number of channels, media subtype, etc. Zones currently allow us to have different settings and we can switch zones depending on what we are playing. However, this is still cumbersome and not really usable for others in the family or for visitors.

in the Custom Video Mode we can currently apply rules based on conditions. These rules include type of splitter/decoder/renderer and filter. If the rules also included zones it would be a very powerful addition to JRiver. This would allow us to specify a zone based on a condition. We could have one zone selected for 5.1 content and one zone for 7.1 content. Or we could have a zone for 5.1 content with media subtype of music, another zone for 5.1 content with media subtype of movie, and another zone for all other content.

To make this work well, audio only sources would need to be included in the Custom Video Mode. We actually can do this now by going to Options > File Types > Playback Method and selecting "JRiver Video Engine (using DirectShow filters)" for an Audio file type. By the way, "JRiver" should be changed to "JRiver."

We would also need to be able to clone zones. It currently takes forever to setup a new zone when one has to remember to change to internal audio, and setup all the DSP settings. This is especially tedious when reentering all the PEQ filters and Room Correction distance\level\crossover settings.

I don't think hooking a system like this to Custom Video modes makes a lot of sense.

It should just be part of the zone or DSP Studio system.  Something like saying 'Automatically use this zone when playing files that match the following search', for example.

+1 for auto-Zone selection based on file type. (flac, mkv, audio, video etc.). Based on display could be interesting, too (monitor 1/2).

It should just be part of the zone or DSP Studio system.  Something like saying 'Automatically use this zone when playing files that match the following search', for example.
I like the criteria being part of the zone as long as someone couldn't accidentally trigger two zones simultaneously with their criteria. I would also think it be helpful to designate one zone as the default.

Since the DSP Studio is separate for each zone one would have to specify criteria for each zone. Changes might require making a new entry in each zone. I think a global method would work better. I guess the "Zone Wizard" could be the same for each DSP Studio instance.

+1, i started a thread on this topic last week. It would be very handy to be able to allocate all music to a zone served by my dac and all movies to a zone served by my HT amp. Cheers

+1 for this It would help me no end

Could it also be based on the source channels? so that I could perform the following for example...

2 Channel Flac - USB DAC Ouput Zone
6 Channel Flac - HDMI Output Zone

+1.

An "Automatic" zone with a rule based method for defining which "real" zone to forward information would give us a lot of flexibility. We can then choose to play to the Automatic zone or manually choose a zone for exceptions.
