JRiver on Windows 2012 Server Core Edition
« on: June 06, 2013, 10:43:32 am »

Hi,

Can I run JRiver on Windows 2012 Server Core Edition?

It seems I can't install JRiver on it, but if I install it on Windows 2012 Server GUI Edition, and then remove the GUI, I can use it as /MediaServer on Core?

Thanks

Sorry, but I'm not sure.

You may be the trailblazer for this one.

I have never been able to install in on core edition due to lack of GUI for configuration. Core edition is really for running web/SQL or services based apps that do not need a login. JRiver needs a user to be logged in normally in order to run the MediaServer.

Windows 2012 Server Core Edition doesn't have the WOW64_Support (to support running 32-bit applications) feature installed by default, so this seems to be the reason for JRiver (32bit application) doesn't work on it.

Can we have a JRiver 64bit version in the near future?

Thanks

Not anytime soon.  There is no advantage and there are some disadvantages.

I'm running Windows Sever 2012 Core mode with JRemote controlling audio playback in JRiver on an Atom based computer, running headless, also using Remote Desktop Control to log into the PC. I initially installed Windows Server 2012 in GUI mode, configured everything so it was functional in GUI mode, then used Power Shell command to convert to Core mode. It works perfectly in my setup and sounds incredible.

lasker98,

I will also use GUI Edition and then convert it to Core, but can you update JRiver on Core Edition?

Hi rsdu,

Sorry for the delayed response. I thought I was subscribed to this topic but I guess I wasn't.

I've never tried to update in Core mode. My guess would be you can't update, since I don't even have the JRiver interface running. I'm strictly running it in media server mode as a service, controlled by JRemote for audio playback only.

Hi lasker98,

No problem, you answered my question here... ;)
