Matt's Return
« on: April 10, 2014, 07:00:36 am »

I'm starting a new thread about Matt.  For those who don't know him, he's JRiver's CTO.  He had a bad fall on January 2, and he's been recovering since.  You can read more in the first post of the "Get Well, Matt" thread.

Yesterday was a big day for all of us.  He returned to JRiver for the first time.

Matt's parents have been taking him on car rides for a couple of weeks, and he's been home a few times for visits.  I learned how to help him get in a car last week, so yesterday I picked him up and brought him to JRiver for a visit.

We had bratwurst on the sidewalk.  It was a lot of fun to be together again.

We had a quick visit inside the building and then I took him back to Courage Center in time for an occupational therapy session.

I'll post more pictures later.

(Left to right in the picture are:  John, Matt, Bob, Laura, Deanna.)

Progress reports:

April 22 -- No more wheelchair

That's great news to hear Matt's progressing so well. Hopefully soon he'll be back at home with his family and doing what he loves doing. It's also great to hear all the love and support he gets not just from his family but also his friends in the JRiver team.

I've been following the regular updates at CaringBridge.

This is heartening, but still, I feel, a ways to go yet. The strength and support surrounding Matt and his family is brilliant. A lesson for us all in there.

Great news. I'm convinced everything will be fine. I know one man, who had this kind of injury and after few years of rehabilitation is now 100% healthy and is back at his work (he is an owner of real estate bussiness). Having family and friends who support you is wonderful and proper rehabilitation can do a lot. I keep my fingers crossed for you Matt.

We'll done, Jim, for helping Matt in this great step in his recovery.  Like many others, I regularly read Brooke's lovely updates on CaringBridge.  Matt's rate of recovery is amazing and must be so encouraging for her and the family.  Your return to work at some point in the near future now seems unquestionable.  Great news!

Nick.

Fantastic news to hear you are back Matt ! ...I've been storing a few questions for you....ok, I may have to get in line. Just kidding,of course, there's no rush but delighted to hear about your progress. Fatigue can be a problem after these sort of injuries so pacing is important when you leave the rehab center (despite the fact that they sometimes push rather than pace in therapy). Anyway, Im sure you're getting a lot of input from the occupational therapist regarding transitioning back home and planning for a return to work. OT's are very clever people (not just coz I married one, Ha). In this country (Oz), OT's have a bachelor of applied science with the emphasis on the applied part. The "occupational" in the title is a little misleading as it refers more to what occupies your time and improving functioning in practical ways...not just your work occupation. They will take all the medical info and all other relevant info on board and translate it into the real world in the most adaptive way. They are a bit like the driver between Operating system (us) and the hardware (our enviroment). However a word of warning, they might get a bit offended if you threaten to 'update' them...I've had mine for 40 years ! HA
Cheers Matt and keep up the good work.

He twisted his knee a little yesterday when he tried to get up from the wrong position.  But before it happened, he was walking better than I've seen lately, with just the physical therapist's hand on his back to keep him steady.

Matt is frustrated with his progress, but his motor skills are coming back quickly.  I'm sure he will walk without assistance in the next month.

Obviously, Matt has a lot to focus on right now.
Do you have any idea when he will be able to pop into the forum to say hi? Maybe he's already peeking.
Since he is going home (for short visits) is he well enough now to check in on the rest of us? It would be a good sign to see his Avatar again.

I saw Matt yesterday.  His parents were there.  They drive up from Waseca a couple times each week.

Matt is now using a walker instead of the wheelchair.  He's used a walker from time to time for a couple of weeks, but now he's using it exclusively.  He gets in an out of bed now without assistance.

I watched him walk out to the car and get in with little help.  It's a huge change since he began going out about three weeks ago.

Yesterday was Brooke's birthday, and his parents took Matt to her work.  He brought her flowers and they took her to lunch.

At the end of the day, Matt went home for dinner.

At the rate things are changing, I think he will be spending more time at home than at Courage Center in a couple of weeks.

Short term memory is still weak but improving.  Long term memory seems fine.

Bob is trying to arrange for another visit to JRiver this week.

Bob and John went to visit Matt today at Courage Center.  They ended up taking him to Micro Center.  Matt used his walker to go in with them.  They said he did really well and that he's almost walking without the walker.  He helped Bob choose a fan.

I saw him today.  He's walking better every time I see him.  He still gets tired after being on his feet for ten minutes, but he's close to walking on his own now, and once he does that, I think his stamina will come back quickly.

His occupational therapist gave him another "thought problem" test today and she said he did well.

He tracks everything I tell him about the business (biz dev, accounting, etc.) and remembers most of it.

I think his memory of the program is perfect, but he will probably have some difficulty when he starts to program again until his short term memory improves.

We're getting close to having Matt back at JRiver, I think.  Hendrik will be here in June and July, and hopefully Robert Ryan (LesPaul) will visit during that time.  We should have a full house again.
