JRiver and PonoMusic -- Now Engaged
« on: April 30, 2014, 10:27:21 am »

I'm thrilled to announce that JRiver has signed an agreement to provide software for the great new PonoMusic service.  The service will launch this fall and promises to deliver the highest quality audio available.  JRiver will help them do that.

John Hamm, CEO of Pono, told me that "we chose you because your product is the best in the world."

Thanks, John!

Congrats Jim and Company.  Although I have some differences/issues with the Pono rollout stuff John clearly got one thing right, JRiver is indeed the best in the world.  :)

Wow, Congratulations!!  It would be really awesome if they had a streaming service with at least 48/24 using JRiver as the platform. What a way to get the whole concept of high resolution music to a much broader audience.

Again Congrats,

Bob

Congrats!  You guys just keep on moving ahead making things better. One of these days we will convince you that high resolution sounds better and not all bit perfect players sound alike! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Wow, congrats!  I think this really brings some legitimacy/street cred to Pono amongst audiophiles and will introduce tons of new listeners to JRiver and the difference of using proper software.  I bet you're glad you have that Mac version up and running, eh?  ;)

A series of good choices, including the designer of the digital circuitry.

I have no need for a portable device, but might end up getting one just to see what he did with the opportunity of a larger economy of scale than his usual salon gear.

And congrats to JRiver !

I'm in on the Kickstarter.  They are making all the right design decisions in an attempt to overcome the limitations of 44.1 sampling while also providing access to high resolution sources that solve the issues entirely.  I'm in 100%.

And joining with JRiver just confirms beyond a doubt that they know what they are doing!

They should have done a limited edition developers series Pono player for JRiver.  With the signatures of everyone at JRiver.    ;D

I'm on the list for a Pono player. This is going to be awesome.

Good work, mojave/Michael too:

Quote from: AVS Thread
Hey Michael,
I gave Scott a photo of you giving your excellent JRiver presentation to the GTG Group and, a photo of John Hamm with the Pono Player giving his talk and demo. Both of you ended up on the cutting room floor. Oh well, such is show biz ... :)

But seriously, your working your magic with JRiver is one of the reason the system sounds so sweet now. Great software and an amazing value.

Regarding Revel vs JTR. I did a short comparison back in 2009 or 10 when I first got the JTR's. I think the JTR Forum Home Theater Section contains that post. That said, these newer JTR's with their larger horns and lower distortion compression drivers put these speakers right in middle of any true audiophile speaker discussion (bring on the DBT). For some they fall short on aesthetics but I like the industrial, utilitarian look and and have a dedicated space so, no harm, no foul. Safe to say, it would be a very rare woman who would allow these into her living room. ;)

I was eyeing/monitoring deveopment of this beaut of a player:

www.calyx.kr

But this Pono is now going to have J RIver software and Ayre-based hardware (and much less expensive).   That's a tough combo to ignore!

Expect the volume to either go deafeningly loud, or silent every time you put the player in a pocket with that volume control. What a terrible design.

At least it might fit in a pocket though, unlike other players which choose to use a non-flat design.

So is this something different?

https://twitter.com/pono/status/488876995963404288

Based on this, it looks like Omnifone is handling the webstore/web integration: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1003614822/ponomusic-where-your-soul-rediscovers-music/posts

I think that's separate from the "Media Center" pono component (try saying that five times fast)

This is from the 'Pono Team's Progress - June 2014' on kickstarter courtesy of thrasherswheat.org:

Quote
We are proud to announce that we have reached a strategic partnership with JRiver (www.jriver.com), who will be providing us with a Pono-branded version of their world-class desktop media center software. This software will be similar to the iTunes® desktop app in that it will allow you to manage your music, create playlists, sync your music to your PonoPlayer, access the PonoMusic store, purchase & download music to your desktop, do player firmware updates, etc.dates, etc.

Hello,

I ordered a chrome Metallica signature model Pono during the Kickstarter campaign. Supposed to have it in October. I've never used JRiver MediaCenter which I understand some version if it will come with my Pono. I wanted to get a head start with indexing my HiRez media rather than waiting until I have the Pono in hand. With that said, if I purchase MC now will that version work with my Pono or will I have to also install the Pono version when it is available?

Maybe best to just wait?

Regardless I look forward to using this software. I've used WinAMP to put media on my 160GB iPod and I've played around with Windows Media Center and Plex on my Synology box. I've never used iTunes. I've mainly used EAC and EZ CD Audio Converter for ripping as well as DVDAE for DVD-A and Blu-ray ripping.

I look forward to any guidance.

All versions of JRiver Media Center come with a 30 day free, full-featured trial. How about installing a version about 30 days before you get your Pono. Then you can play with the settings and become familiar with the program. When your Pono arrives, you may be able to use the licence it comes with to seamlessly continue with your library. Note: I am just speculating because I don't know how the system will work. In any case, my suggestion will mean that you will become familiar with the basics without spending anything - unless you really want to!

Your other option would be to have a look at Media Jukebox, MC's little brother.

Leave you to googlerise it.
