video stops randomly (can't figure out why)
« on: March 14, 2015, 05:48:31 pm »

I'm now using an Intel NUC running Windows 8.1 to play video and audio. The server is in another part of the house, but it is wired to the NUC.

I'm using the default video settings in MC20. But every 20-30 or so the video simply stops. No error message. It just stops playing. I hit play again and off it goes, only to stop again about 20 minutes later.

Any idea what could be causing this? I've never had the problem before. I'm playing mkv files.

It could be that Windows is timing out due to inactivity. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windows/en-US/34ab1111-39a3-4e3c-82a7-7fbeb4af8e79/disable-win-8-idle-timeout

Article discusses changing the timeout settings on Windows. Does your server run Win8 also?

That sounds like a sleep issue on the server machine.  Probably a hard drive sleep issue.

No, server running Vista. I've adjusted the time out on the NUC. Both machines are set never to go to sleep.

EDIT: just happened with audio-only, too. Other possible explanations?

Still happening. Any more ideas what might be causing this?

Where are the files stored?

Try copying a handful of files over to the C drive (of the server) and playing them from there.  If that fixes it, then you know the issue is with your media disk in some way.

If not, then perhaps it could be network, audio, or video device problems (drivers or something).  Either way, we need to narrow down the cause.

I have been seeing this too - except not as frequently as OP. I'm going to investigate the "Machine Inactivity Limit" fix/comment posted above to see if it is a fix, or related to my video stopping issue (my Server is on Win7 and my Client is Win8.1).

Both on C drive and on external drives. Happens in both cases.

I suspect it has something to do with overdriving the server. I have been uploading data to a cloud from that machine for a couple weeks now, plus running another backup of one of my external drives. Tonight I paused both of these processes and was able to watch a 45 minute TV episode with no problems. I will keep testing and report back.
