still tagging issues...please help!
« on: August 24, 2015, 03:46:27 pm »

getting A LOT of crashing during tagging (tag action window)

it's quite intermittent; i can sometimes tag 20 fields in a row with no issues, then i may get 5 crashes in a row the next 5 tries

the crash occurs when changing a field completely (i.e. renaming album/artist, changing track#, etc.) - as soon as i've made the tag change and press <enter> to save the change, i get the old windows MC isn't responding error.  if i change something manually (i.e. click on it in a pane and change it) then i never get the crash.

for completeness, i'm using a smartlist to find files (if "disc" is in album title, if ( or ) is in title, etc.) then tagging the files from inside the smartlist.  however it doesn't matter if i exit the smartlist into a normal pane view of the same files, it still crashes

i've captured another one in a log.  i really hope someone can spot something wrong with my setup...this is getting pretty intense now, i'm trying to do a complete operation on my entire library but it's going much slower than it should be

thanks

Probably another Antivirus problem.   Uninstall it to confirm.

Hi Ferday

Looked very briefly at your log and can't seem to find the "crash" but looks like its loading cue files ....

Also noticed that there is importing going on at the same time (end of log) and the "bad files" are all "cue"

Do you have similiar issues with non-cue loaded media (like individual flac files, mp3s etc).. might have something to do with the cue changes that were made late in version 20??

just thought i'd update since i've had some time to do tagging

AV completely uninstalled....still getting the error.  it's highly reproducible at this point

if i click in any field, sometimes the cursor appears to type the tag.  sometimes, a list appears of all the other values that are in that field for other albums.

IF the list shows up, MC is going to crash as soon as i try to type the new tag in.  IF the cursor shows up, the tagging will work fine.

this is with ANY field

It doesn't seem to matter if there is a cue in the folder or not (but thanks arindelle)

Try updating your video driver.

Any other software running that is video related?

If this issue is still persisting, would you be willing to update to the latest build of MC21, reproduce the crash, then post a log again?

It sounds like you're pretty busy; however, if you have the time, and if the problem still persists, there is something else to look at. The log file is showing some strange information and the crash dump is pointing to something else very messy. After looking over the log file, it appears to be skipping a lot of bad files, such as .cue, .flac, and .jpg. This may not be related, but it's still strange.

What you could do is disable auto-import first, so it doesn't run in the background and mess up the log. Enable logging and restart Media Center so there is a clean log. Then, manually try to import one of these bad files to see if it works (one example being E:\BEATS\ ... \Mad Blunted Jazz (Disc I).cue). Then, could you report the results here along with the log? If it still fails to import, you may need to e-mail the file so we can try and figure out why Media Center can't import it.

thanks BradATIMA

indeed that .cue will not import.  i can read it and stuff, not sure whats up.  i turned off auto import, reset logging, put the bad .cue into an incoming folder and restarted MC and manually imported the incoming folder to see what would happen.

i haven't been tagging much but the little i've gotten to i haven't had the crash as much, i've mostly been doing new stuff so maybe it is some bad ancillary files...?

i can email that .cue if you like.

It looks like when you moved that file to another folder you were able to import it successfully

"0098982: 6736: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: F:\slssk\Mad Blunted Jazz (Disc I).cue"

as opposed to before when it failed.

"0131509: 5272: Import: AddFile: Skipping bad file: E:\BEATS\ ... \Mad Blunted Jazz (Disc I).cue"

Can you reset the log again and then try putting that file back in the original folder and try importing it from there (or just import it from the original folder if a copy is still there)? Go ahead and e-mail me that .cue file, but also include the log from this import attempt. My e-mail is brad at jriver.

I also get consistent crashes on MC20 and 21 when tagging on a Windows 10 machine (doesn't seem to be a problem with WIndows 7).  It happens with ALAC files.  Opening a debugger shows the attached snapshot. something to do with in_mp4.dll??

I just turned off my AV (Qihoo360) and no crash.  I also do get a lot of AV pop ups when installing JRiver 21 so I'm not surprised.  (I select Allow All) when I get the prompts...

Aside from turning off the AV what other choices do I have to resolve this?

thx

AV support should be available from the company that provides the software.

Understood but JRiver is crashing..Shouldn't that be fixed even though caused by the Antivirus software?
If you need a log let me know...

you have to set exceptions in the AV to NOT look at ANY of the MC21 folders...and NOT look at ANY of your media folders where you've stored your actual files

and that may, or may not, work

JRiver can't do anything about how your chosen AV software works, it's NOT an MC problem.  if the exceptions are working, many AV softwares leave MC alone

No.  It shouldn't.  It is a problem with the antivirus software.  You might let them know.

I added this to the long list of antivirus problems.

Here's the JRiver Wiki entry on how to configure your anti-virus software to ignore MC:

I've added the whole JRiver directory in the trusted list along with the directory where my media files are located. Rebooted and I still get crashes when changing tags.

I have a couple of log files where can I send them?

I also sent a note to Qihoo360.

I'm not a programmer but shouldn't JRiver just give a tagging error message if it can't access or change the file tag instead of crashing?

thx

All right,
I have tamed Qihoo 360 it seems :)...
I've added the *.exe files separately instead of the whole folder and added the:
C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\J River in the exclusion list and it seems ok now.

Yep, it's always best to exclude the executables regardless of antivirus used - which is the first thing I always do on a clean Windows install.
