delays

We have installed ICE.OFF.SITE version 3.0.11 and are having a 3-5 second delay problem when using the program.  Do you have any suggestions.  We optimized the computer and that gave us a quick fix for about one day then it returned to the delays.

Any help appr.

When is the delay? Between typing a character and seeing it's return or upon login or during screen draws?? More info would be useful.

The first thing that comes to mind is a unstable phone line (if you are dialing in with a modem). Since the modems error correct by default and they adjust the bit rate depending on the line condition, they will "retrain" if there are unacceptable numbers of errors.
You wouldn't see the errors since the modems are in error correcting mode but you would notice a random delay when the modems retrain.

If this is the case, avoid a pbx at all costs. The analog port on a digital phone system is often of very low quality.

The only other thing you could do would be to try a different modem on either side or adjust the modem baud rates down.

Sorry, The delay is between typing the character and seeing it's return and during screen draws.

After reading your reply, I did to slow the baud rate down and it is still slow like it was before.

Can we go through dsl on this program? Both our home port and ours have dsl, is there any way to run this program through it?

If it happens ALWAYS, something else weird is going on. The issue I was talking about would generally be sporadic. There may be something wrong with the modem connection or the serial port on the Unix side. Is anyone else able to use that dialup number without trouble??

You would use ICE.TCP.PLUS or PRO  w/DSL however since you would be going over the internet you need to have a secure setup since it would require opening up your server to the outside. In this case you would want a static address on your DSL connection and a firewall on the company side and setup that firewall so only YOUR DSL address can access the unix machine. Also, in this situation you would want to use a ssh (secure telnet) connection to encrypt your transmission over the internet.
Finally to do that would require your unix administrator to setup an ssh server on the unix machine unless it has one by default.
