Configuring printing w/ TCP v5.0
« on: May 12, 2004, 10:36:50 am »

Per client:  "I am trying to configure printing from a SCO Unixware server to print on a Windows workstation using ICE.TCP ver 5.0.  Where should I copy the printer interface file  icelp.scr  as I cannot locate where the interface files are kept.  In SCO OpenServer, the file is normally copied to the models directory."

That's correct, according to the instructions I have, you should copy the file to the model directory, which should be:
/var/spool/lp/model

For complete instructions, you can refer to the following document:

Per client:  I have done the configuration on the server and edited the services and the inetd.conf files to put the required lines.
>From the windows W/station the icelp is giving the following error.
"Unix host 196.1.100.3 does not reply, or wrong socket number 2346 for icelpd. Terminating icelpd"
Hw can i sort out this?

Logged in on the Unix server,
telnet localhost 2346

if you get:

Connection refused

The icelpd server isn't installed properly or inetd hasn't been restarted. It's pretty likely that this is your problem. The specific instructions for Unixware that I pointed you to are in ADDITION to installing the icelpd program onto the Unixware machine. You still have to go through the steps of installing icelpd.

put icelpd in /usr/bin then
chmod 755 /usr/bin/icelpd
test it. type in icelpd -c on the unix command line and you should get the copyright back:
# icelpd -c
                   Icelpd - ICE.TCP Print Server.
                Version 4.07b.
                By Roman Oliynyk.
                (C) 1994 James River Group, INC.
                   All rights reserved.

Put in the entry in the /etc/services file:

icelpd          2346/tcp

and in inetd.conf

icelpd  stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/bin/icelpd icelpd

and restart inetd or reboot the machine.

ps -ef | grep inetd
(to get the inetd process number)
then
kill -HUP 1234
where you REPLACE 1234 with the process number from the ps -ef | grep inetd command.

After that, you should be able to telnet localhost 2346 and get a connection. This shows that the icelpd daemon is working on the Unix side and it should now work on your pc if you did the other steps from the last message properly.

Configuring printing w/ TCP v5.0
« Reply #6 on: June 04, 2004, 02:17:01 pm »

from client:

HI.
I managed to configure the printing and it works. However i have one problem. The configuration requires me to create sub directories in /usr/tmp which i am doing. The problem is that every time i reboot the server, the subdirectories dissapear and have to be recreated for the printing to work.
How do i go round this problem.

Unfortunately, your system is "cleaning" /usr/tmp on reboot. You can create a temporary directory somewhere else, i.e. /usr/mytmp and set the premissions to 777.

mkdir /usr/mytmp
chmod 777 /usr/mytmp

Then change the icelp script on the unix machine to use this new tmp dir and change the settings in icelp on the windows machine to use /usr/mytmp instead of /usr/tmp
