ICE-TCP Pro under Windows XP
« on: April 10, 2005, 02:20:37 am »

Hello,

we are german users of ICE-TCP Pro 5.1.25 under Windows 98 and Windows XP, the emulation is running under win98 without problems, but under winXP we become at the sign Ä only a smiley (a very friendly face).
We are connented to a SCO OpenServer Enterprise 5.0.6.

The problem is hanging between ICE-TCP Pro 5.1.25 and Windows XP charmapping!

Please give me help!

Greetings
schimmi

Sounds like the top bit is getting stripped off of the character.

Try doing a
stty cs8 -parenb -istrip
at a shell prompt and see if it helps.

(I assume you are using the 850 character set as well)

Yes i am using ICE850 character set.
The command
stty cs8 -parenb -istrip
does not help.
The sign Ä looks like a smilie, all other characters like ä,ö,Ö,ü and Ü are correctly.
Only the big Ä is not correct. (This looks like a very friendly smilie!)
But the problem must hang between ICE.TCP pro and Windows XP not at the SCO-UNIX side, because under Windows 98 all sign´s are correctly.

Hmmm, I'm probably going to have to setup a machine to test this. Do you know the hex code for the Ä character?
The smilie sounds like 81 or 82 hex with the top bit stripped you get 01 or 02 hex which are the smilies.

I was thinking that XP might be acting differently because of a newer tcp/ip stack.
Are you using SP2?

Yes, we are using Windows XP with SP2.
The hex code for the Ä character is 8E.
The following charaters with his hex code will sign correctly, ä hex 84, ö hex 94, Ö hex 99, ü hex 81, Ü hex 9A and ß hex E1.

One last question before I start  building a test setup.
I assume you are using a typical install for a German PC setup, with a German keyboard, etc??

Yes, we are using a standard install for a German PC setup and a German keyboard, because we live in Germany. I hope you can help us.

I am trying to finisth the install for Tel-net pro on an XP machine. We have ver 5.1.19.  I was getting an error  to run Config wizard again. I went to the registry and fixed everything you had listed there. Now I am getting an error when it starts to connect : Timed Out. What should I try now so it will finish connecting? ???
Thanks

Sounds like the problem is unrelated to your configwizard trouble. More likely you have a firewall blockig the connection. Try using microsoft telnet to the same address and see if it works, i.e.

start->run
type in:
telnet 1.2.3.4
and hit enter

(replace 1.2.3.4 with your unix machines ip address)

I'm assuming that this will not work either which would point to a firewall or other related problem.

BTW, if you need to reply to this, please post a new message in the PRO forum instead of tacking onto this thread.

I've verified that it is a problem in PRO with the 850 font. If you have another 850 font that is monospaced it should show up in the font list under profiles. You could try that.

I also verified that the problem DOES NOT EXIST in the classic (4.4) client. You could install that and give it a try (you select the keyboard in classic under iceconfig->general tab->keyboard language. When you select the German keyboard it automatically selects the 850 font.)

Let me know how that works for you. I'll see if I can figure out what's up with the 850 font in the pro client on 2k/xp. It's more complicated than 4.4 because it's a truetype font.

Yes in the Classic Version 4.4 client all signs are correctly when i´m select the German keyboard.

I know that the problem is so easy, because i have look with an editor to the 850 font, but i don´t know where the problem is.

The font is unicode and I think the problem is with the 8 bit mapping of 0x8E to the unicode character. It's coming up with the "unknown" character instead which is the smilie in the 850 font and the euro in the 850eu font. For some reason this isn't a problem in 98.
