PROBLEM: We are having problems with branches connecting to the SCO UNIX machine across VPN. The sessions are freezing up every few minutes.. it turns white and the user is disconnected.. we think it is due to intermittent latency, but the keep alive setting didn't help. We want to try implementing a terminal server in the corporate office, so the branches can RDP in and connect to UNIX from there.
RESPONSE: Telnet/SSH are connected sessions. This means the connection can NEVER drop or you'll see the problem he is having. Note that one of our technicians has these types of sessions set from work to home (and vice versa) and they never drop unless one side or the other loses it's internet connection.
Now the keepalive will keep the connection from INTENTIONALLY being dropped by a router and/or ISP but that won't fix connections that do drop because of ISP reliability issues.
That Keepalive setting is in 10 second intervals. 2 is 20 seconds. It really shouldn't matter much if it was set to 2 as far as bandwidth is concerned.
Terminal server licensing would probably work around the problem since the connected sessions are between the terminal server and the UNIX box and the terminal server connections between the offsite user and the terminal server are connectionless (UDP) over a VPN so they can tolerate (somewhat) flaky connections.
