Remote printing problem with Ice LP
« on: September 26, 2006, 10:24:10 am »

I have a remote user who logs into our system via VPN to a Linux server. He has ICETCP PRO version 5.1.21 on a laptop which I installed. He uses Ice LP to print from our business software to his local printer. He has a new Dell multifunction printer. Nothing will print from Ice LP to that printer.  He also purchased a new HP printer. It is a D4160. He is unable to print to it also. Both of these are connected to his laptop via USB. He is able to print from his laptop via Ice LP to two older HP printers. Is there something about the compatability with the newer printers or should settings be changed for them? The configuration for the Ice LP is the same as what we have been using on a two remote PC's that we have had for several years. They are working fine and are printing data from the same Linux server.

We made some printing changes on version 5.1.21 which might account for the problem.  Have them download the latest version of TCP Pro (v5.1.26) from our website (running the user install) and see if the new version fixes the printing problems.

The real cheap printers are generally Winprinters, they have no printer language of their own and can really only print bitmaps (the conversion from characters to a bitmap is done in the windows printer driver). The D4160 appears to be a Winprinter. The specification page doesn't list a printer language. What you are looking for is a printer that does PCL. Anything like LIDL means it's a Winprinter.

ICE has some limited compatibility for Winprinters with a "raster" printer driver in Telnet Pro, Dejawint and Deja32 in the most recent versions that emulates a simple line printer. There is no support for Winprinters in ICE.LP so you will need to use a printer that supports PCL for ICE.LP.
