Ripping multi-channel DSD to PCM
« on: October 26, 2015, 12:04:25 pm »

I have several of the RCA Living Stereo multi-channel SACD reissues.  I'd love to rip the multi-channel content to my Mac.  Can that be done?  I don't care if the ripped file is multi-channel DSD or multi-channel PCM.  Can I use my universal player instead of my CD-ROM as a transport with an HDMI cable?

Sadly, SACD discs require a special drive to read them.  Those drives, as far as I know, are only in SACD players.  *and* the Sony PS3.  But only a certain generation of the PS3 has the SACD capable drives.  They sell for more than a regular PS3 because of the SACD ripping capability.  To do it with a PS3 requires some special software and stuff.  I've only read up on it a little.

Last I checked there was a guy on one of the forums (maybe computer audiophile?) who is building a custom board to try to make an external drive, using PS3 drives, that you can connect to a computer to rip SACDs directly.

It's kind of a silly situation, but that's how it stands today, as far as I know.

If I remember right, ripping SACD discs requires a Playstation 3 using an older firmware.

Early PS3's only is my understanding.  There's more on our wiki.

Thanks, guys.  I did do my search of the WIKI and the forum, so I've seen the older threads about the PS3.  I was hoping that either things had changed since those threads were written, or that I was in luck because I didn't care about preserving the DSD signal.  What would MC21 do with a signal from the HDMI output of a universal player reading the multi-channel layer of a hybrid SACD?  All I want is the multi-channel information.

What about a HDMI multi-channel audio adaptor? There are modeis on eBay that offer 24 bit 88.2KHz audio output in stereo and multi-channel from a SACD player that provides HDMI output

Are you suggesting recording SACD's in real time via an HDMI connection from SACD player to computer?  I personally wouldn't bother.  Seems too much like recording LP records onto cassettes in the 80s.  :)

Recording real-time?  Not really.  I have these multi-channel SACDs that I'd like to rip into my digital library.  I've got the stereo PCM layer ripped, but I'd also like to get a digital copy of the multi-channel layer, which is coded in DSD.  I understand that ripping the DSD layer directly isn't possible.  Is it possible to read the DSD layer, convert it to multi-channel PCM and then save those data?  I ask about the HDMI output because my Oppo universal player, I think, reads the DSD layer, recodes the multi-channel DSD data to multi-channel PCM and then sends that to an outboard DAC (in this case my processor).

This guy is working on a project to read/rip SACDs.  Unfortunately, his work has been slowed down by recently having a baby :)
