Problems playing with 2XDSD in DoP with Geek Pulse Xfi
« on: September 01, 2015, 01:17:40 pm »

Hi,

Since July I get problems with playing wav files with my LH Labs Geek Pulse Xfi DAC through 2XDSD in DoP format output, 24 Bit-integer and kernel streaming with JRiver.

The sound suffers from constant drop outs, JRiver freezing and Geek Pulse shows intermittently 352.8K and DSD128.
I contacted LH Labs support, but they said the problem was the JRiver player.

Can anyone help me with this problem ?!

Thanks in advance.

How is the DAC connected to the computer?

Are you converting on-the-fly?

Bandwidth is a possibility.  Lack of computing power is also a possibility.

MC has a benchmark under the Help menu.  Please run it and paste the results here.

Hi Jim,

The DAC is connected to the computer through a LightSpeed 1G cable (high bandwith cable, by the way), with DSD over PCM format. My computer runs on a Intel i3-3.3GHz, with 8 Gb memory.

The benchmark test:

Are the files on an internal or external disk or on an network drive? Can you play 192K and 384K PCM files?  If you can do 384K PCM, try converting a file to 2xDSD (DoP) and see if you can play that file, without real time converion. With a JMark of 527 you may well have problems just playing PCM files depending on the disk setup, let alone converting to DoP on the fly.

That's a very weak machine and I wouldn't expect it to play any large files.

That's a very weak machine and I wouldn't expect it to play any large files.

I play 192K files and 2X DSD files (not real time converted) on a machine with a lower JMARK than that. You just cannot be doing anything else and have to carefully of the settings. Having the files on an internal disk is a big help. I have not tried 384K files.

EDIT:

I just converted a 192K PCM file to 384K and it ran fine from my local disk. However, when I tried to upscale it to 384K on the fly, the output stuttered and the CPU was at 75% - not surprising. I also took the 192K file and converted it to 2xDSD (DoP) on the fly and then to a file. The file ran OK, the on the fly conversion did not.

My system has a JMark of 477.

The conclusion - you can run at these rates on this type of slow system, but only not if you are doing on the fly conversions. I will say I have had to tinker with various settings to get the system to work at these rates, especially with files on external disks.

First, there may be something wrong with your machine if you get such different JRMarks.

Did you try any of the things I tried? How do  192k and 384K PCM files play? How about 1x and 2x DSD (DoP)  files?  How about native 2x DSD? How about upscaling 192K to 384K on the fly? You can create a test file of any of these by using Convert File and setting the output format in DSP Settings. What is your CPU usage when converting to DSD (DoP) on the fly? Are the files on internal, external, or network drives?

Ok, solved the problem now !!! The problem really was the machine, most specifically problems with CPU ventilation (with temperatures about 93º C !!!! - almost fried the thing ...). Bought Noctua NH-U9S cooler and now temperatures are about 39º C ...
Now all played spacious and naturally smooth with 2XDSD in DoP output format  ;) :D - The Joy Of Music !!!
Thanks to all for the support  ;) ;)
