MC 21, exaSound E22, DSD4 Upsampling not working
blgentry:
As I understand it, any time you change the sampling rate in JRiver, you are going through PCM processing to get there. So "upconverting" from DSD128 to DSD256 goes: DSD128 > PCM > DSD256
Which makes sense from a technical perspective. But from a sound quality perspective, why would you want to do so? Forget the PCM step in the middle. Why would you want to try to upconvert in the first place? You can't ADD information. There's nothing to add. If you like the results, I won't argue with you though.

Never the less, it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to.
With Bitstreaming set to DSD, and DSP Studio set to 4X over Dop, no upsampling occurs.
What is MC 21 Supposed to do?
Is it doing it?
I don’t know.
I don’t want DSD converted to PCM, then back to DSD.
HQ doesn’t do that.
DSD 256 on the HQ Player is quite good.
More refined and Analog-like, I would say.
Is MC 21 “wired” backwards, as far as Bitstreaming/DSP Studio are concerned?
I bought MC 21 specifically for 4x DSD up sampling.
If it doesn’t do it without converting to PCM, then I’ll continue with HQ instead.
I think all exaSound owners are interested in your response!
blgentry:
^ I don't understand what you're asking or saying. MC *is* upconverting your files, right?
As far as "wired backwards", I don't know what you mean. Bitstreaming is supposed to pass along the data for DSD untouched. So DSD128 should play as DSD128 and DSD256 should play as DSD256.
The other way to do it is with and Output Format setting. Output Format converts things up or down in order to get to your target output format. With it set to DSD256 (4x DSD) everything should get converted to that. Is it not doing that?
BTW, I'm by no means an expert on this, nor do I speak for JRiver. I was just interjecting here because I'm constantly baffled by people wanting to upconvert digital audio files. Perhaps I should have just stayed silent. :)

No problem.
Have you heard exasound E22 with the HQ Player?
That’s what it’s all about.
I definitely don’t want that extra conversion stage.
Also, I guess I don’t really understand how to use MC 21.
If I can’t get that ( upsampling WO/converting first to PCM ), here, no problem, I won’t use MC 21.
Just looking for Options.

I have not had the opportunity to do so. So no.

It's my understanding that upconverting (or down converting) to/from DSD goes through PCM in the middle. But I could be WRONG. I'm pretty sure I read it, but again, I don't speak for JRiver. Perhaps someone more official can comment on this.
Good luck in your musical endeavors. :)
Brian.
