MC 20, MC 21, Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan, 3 questions.
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:57:58 pm »

I am currently using MC 19 on Mavericks.
I have bought MC 20 and MC 21 but both crash way more often than MC 19.

With MC 19 I know the only crash happens when dragging a song to the end of a list, so I don't do that.

1. Is it expected that MC 20 and MC 21 have better behavior than this? I find them completely unusable.
2. Is it that they have more features than MC 19?

They never worked long enough for me to find out.

3. My last question is, are all of three of these versions expected to work on Yosemite and El Capitan?

I wouldn't mind the upgrade but I'm fearful that MC 19 will stop working, and I'll be left with trying to find a new music player.

Crashes aren't normal at all.  Make sure you're using the latest version available.  MC21 is on the Download Page.

I have always used the latest revision of each version I have tried.

MC has crashed on me a few times.  Maybe 6 or 8 times in a year, roughly.  I consider a crash to be very abnormal.  If you see frequent crashes, something is wrong for sure.

Tell us a little more about your setup.  Capture a crash report the next time MC crashes and send it in here.  Hopefully someone can help diagnose the problem.

Brian.

Same here: MC21.08 constantly crashing to the point where it is absolutely unusable (running latest version registered with a Master License, on Yosemite, MacBook Pro mid-2009).

It tries to open tons of new MC windows (new icons keep appearing in the taskbar) right from the start, when nothing is playing.

Antoine:  Try to disable auto import and see if it still crashes.  It sounds like MC *might* be hitting some bad files and crashing.

Tools > Options > Library & Folders > run auto import in background > (uncheck)

I'm using 19.0.163  - which reliably crashes when dragging a file to the end of a playlist.  There is no traceback.

Here is the crash for media center 20.  The crash is in a sub process, and it pops up every minute or so.
All of my music is already imported from the same place media center 19 is using.

It looks like the crash is on an audio video format. I find that strange since I do not have any videos in my music folder.

the crash along with the loss of all of my views, playlists and everything else creates a big barrier to changing from media center 19.

Well, the software stopped crashing after having been started 3 or 4 times...  ?

Have you tried:
- Launch the Mac in Recovery Mode
- run Disk Utility
    - Check the hard disk
    - Pre- El Capitan: repair disk parmissions?

For Recovery mode check:

It tries to open tons of new MC windows (new icons keep appearing in the taskbar) right from the start, when nothing is playing.

Just FYI, this is normal behavior when MC is importing new files.

This may indicate that MC is crashing when it encounters disk corruption or a bad file in one of the watched directories. I concur with the suggestion above of checking your disk for errors. This is also covered in the Troubleshooting Guides on JRiver's Wiki:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Disks#Filesystem_Corruption

However, you might have better luck generally (not specifically for this issue) if you create a Library Backup in your old version of MC, and then restore it in MC21, rather than trying to import everything from scratch.  See this article for more detail:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup
