Hello !

I run MC21 (Windows 7) and am an avid podcast consumer. I very often get prompted by windows to either move, duplicate or replace a file, because apparently MC21 is trying to D/L multiple times the same podcasts episodes. It happens constantly and is completely ruining the podcast experience for me since I have in the end to deactivate automatic D/L... I've never had any problems with these podcasts in other apps (iTunes, Overcast, etc.). What can be done about it?

Thanks !

I have had that problem, and it bothered me also.   For me it happens only when the podcast publisher changes the Episode URL for a podcast.   The new URL makes Media Center think it is a new episode, so it downloads it as such.  When this happens, the subject hasn't changed, so when the "new" episode gets stored, has the same name as the original, suffixed by a (1) or (2) etc.

At the time this decision was made to match on the URL, the designer worried that some podcasts would be published with the same subject, so that matching subject would cause some episodes not to be downloaded.  On the other hand the URL is guaranteed to be unique.  Detecting duplicates matching on the URL means it is guaranteed you will get all the episodes, but sometimes you will get duplicates.

I've personally dealt with the problem by looking at my complete list of podcasts (e.g. Downloaded Podcast playlist) and then deleting all the episodes with a (1) or (2) etc at the end of the subject name.  This is a lousy kludge, I know, but it has worked for me for some years now.

When you get duplicates, do the duplicates all have different Episode URLs than the originals?

You mention that some other podcast programs don't have this problem.  Should Media Center be detecting duplicates based on the Episode Name rather than the URL?   Perhaps Media Center should be matching on the Episode Name and date.   What do you think?

Hello and sorry for the delay, I didn't realize there was an answer!

I don't think the podcasts I'm having problems with change their episode URLs.

I'm not sure I understand the way you handled the problem...

Since I deleted all the duplicates, I have yet to get a new wave of duplicates to tell you if the podcast episodes I'm having trouble with share a same URL with the original. But what I already noticed, is that generally, the files of the duplicate episodes MC21 is prompting me about have a weird numbered file name (like 12314684616981961.mp3) while the files of the original episode are named properly after the title of the episode.

If you publish the Feed URL for the podcast you are having trouble with, I will put it on my list and watch it for awhile.   Perhaps I will notice something that helps to resolve the problem you are having.

Great!

I just have to wait for the problem to pop back up since I only reactivated Podcast D/L and I can't remember which feeds precisely are causes for trouble.
