DLNA Library tag update issue
« on: December 25, 2015, 04:49:27 am »

Hi, I'm new to the MC

I have put all my FLAC's on a Synology diskstation and I serve they up to the MC via DLNA running on a small-form PC running Linux Mint.

When I edit the tags I understand that I am only editing a local database.. I edit the tags from my Windows7 laptop, also running the MC and I understand that I need to push those changes down into the files on the synology - it doesn't happen automatically.

However I get the following error when (attached) when I try and write the tags. Does the DLNA protocol support this or do I need to map the music directory on the NAS and treat it as a local folder to update the tags.

Thanks for any pointers.

The UPNP specification does have methods for updating tags in files in a library. However I am 99% sure that neither MC nor your Synology server would actually support those methods. Very few do..

So rather than having MC access your library on the Synology via its UPNP server, you should instead turn off the Synology UPNP server, and instead let MC access the library via a regular network file share on the Synology. That way you can have full read write access to the files.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your reply.

I had always intended to use the NAS only as a file server but I have the following problem with JRiver:

I have already copied 1000+ albums onto the NAS. JRiver does not seem to allow me to create a library in the folder where I have copied the file to. I don't want to move them as it will take forever. Is there a backdoor route?

Regards, Graham

You don't have to move any files. You just have to add the path name of the existing music folder to the list of folders that MC shall include in its library.

Thanks, I've figured it all out now. Just mounting the share as cifs and then using the MC as DLNA server so can control remotely.
