update or refresh library after file change
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:52:42 pm »

Is there some way to update or refresh a library after changing files outside of JRiver using utilities such as Windows Explorer or Tag&Rename?

I am ripping a large classical music collection and setting up a file structure of composer\album\track.  After dbPowermaster does its thing, I tweak the folder and file names so that they sort correctly (symphonies come before violin concertos, file names (movements) all in proper order).  Once I get it set up it works great and allows an electronic analog to browsing through a library of CDs on a gigantic shelf.

For my Main Library I set up the root drive as the place JRiver looks for files, and then have subdirectories for Classical, Collections, Pop, etc.  My problem is that if I tweak the directory and file structure (as is constantly necessary as my ripping progresses) , the Main Library no longer finds the files.  I am hoping that there is a simple way to update or reset the Main Library after I change the underlying files.

It would be best to tag inside MC and use MC's tools.  Rename, Move & Copy is the tool to try.  Try a few files before you do very many.

You can add custom tags to MC if needed.

The wiki has topics that will help.

I'm unclear on what's happening.  Are you using auto import?  Or are you importing directories one at a time?

If you want to do it manually, in Standard View you can go to "Drives & Devices>Explorer" and locate the folder you want to update then right click on it and select "Import Into Library".

Thank you everybody for the help.  I figured out what I was doing wrong, cause by lack of experience and some dunderheadedness.

First I did not have auto-import looking at the right directories.  So I pointed auto-import to the directories with the files on my server.

More basic, I lost sight of where the files actually are.  The files are on my server, I was working from a client computer.  I went to "Drives and Devices" on the client computer to change the file names on the server.  Having corrected the auto-import setting, the library on the server was updating just fine.  I had to sync the library on the server to the one on the client, and all was well.

Not being one to pussyfoot around, I then dumped about 20 GB of new files onto the server, and the library updated perfectly.

Thanks for the help, and your patience with a new guy trying to figure it all out.
