Headphones DSP, how does it work?
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:53:45 am »

In my head-fi rig, I use the headphones dsp with "standard" or "standard (increased spatialization)" settings. Not for objective reasons, but I find it less tiring on my ears. Recently I discovered that the volume went slightly down when it was enabled (with disabled MC volume, and fixed analog headphone amp volume). How does this tech work? And what causes that little, but still noticeable drop in volume? Just very curious.

The description on the DSP itself is pretty good:

Crossfeed makes audio played through headphones sound more natural and less fatiguing.

Audio is mixed between the contralateral and ipsilateral ears after modeling the frequency curve and time-delay associated with non-headphone listening.

As for decreasing the volume a little, that's just something you have to do when you start mixing signals so you don't clip.
