Yeah I was promising others I would try and test a longhorn build to see if the kmixer bit mangling has been fixed and if we can drop the ASIO issues...

Not sure if the current builds around are very far along in features as even the new filesystem was not in the last builds I saw and that has to be pretty base level functionality...

WOW.

Looks like the biggest overhaul to windows in AGEs.

XP was just the previous versions but prettier - this looks like it's all being re-worked (GUI Side) and designed a LOT more for the new uses of computers.

Cant wait till this is out!!

I have been keeping a close eye on the progress of longhorn for about a year now and it reall ylooks like it is shaping up to be a very nice OS. Its a complete rewrite basically as the filesystem is being rewritten, the graphics subsystem is being rewritten, everything almost is totally new. I think it will probably be the most radical change since 3.1 -> 95.

I for one can't wait

I cant wait - GUI looks like it's finally going to give Mac a run for it's money BUT - BIG BUT - if they're re-writing it from the filesystem up - how backwards compatible is it going to be??
I hope it wouldn't require me to drop all my older programs.

Apparently the actual filesystem will still be NTFS so should be backwards compatible but will run a plug in on top that will make the file system run in a similar way to Yukon the new MS SQL database engine. Basically files will no longer be location based but will be searchable using meta data. Quite an exciting prospect. It looks interesting, and pretty too, but my way of working with media computers (remote controls, macros for the HTPC) ensures me that I rarely see Windows, so I tink I'll stick with XP. I'm sure Longhorn does not come cheap in hardware demands...

Yeah theres quite the chance that we are going to get less functionality out of media use (and at the same time if we desire DVD-A players / HiDef / multichannel etc be forced to upgrade) in newer OS's...

Take the time to be vocal with any producer of software that does not balance rights against access... There are tradeoffs (eg I can live with some form of DRM as I dont abuse IP rights) but I want to have full manipulation abailites.

From discussion with the WMP9 group (they are a surprisingly good bunch) they seem to understand that people will simply boycott DRM if its not user friendly (like the T2 was friendly

) and gives as much as it takes...

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if WMA is the only format of compressed audio that's possible to play on Longhorn when it finally comes out. So I'll stick to XP the next 60 years, I guess...

If I absolutely have to have a Longhorn PC because they come out with HD DVD that'll only play on that (in the unlikely event that it's not cracked to play on XP in any way) I'll have two media computers. And make sure that the one with Longhorn has no possiblities what so ever to contact any other computer on the network. Firewall? Nope. Pull the network card plug!

As for Windows Media Player I only use that for streaming the news to "the Head" on my PPC or notebook, and the notebook version is blocked b firewall, so it can't get anything from outside my local network. Trust Micro$oft? Not if I was drowning and they had a thousand lifebelts!

Even if they tried to make it play WMA only - some kind hearted soul would spare us all and hack it.

Also - MS wants to take control - but they know that at the end of the day - they are nothing without customers and so they'll never push it toooo far in one go - it'll be a slow and steady process.

Yeah, it means a lot of older apps don't run. But you have to stop looking back and move forward at some point.

Hear Hear. I have no essential programs that would suffer if win 9x was no longer supported. Hell, MC would be rewritten to work with it the very next day I guess

and Office is no longer compatible with 9x anyway.
