Need one tv channel to only use a GROUP of tuners
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:42:07 pm »

I have 6 Ceton tuners & 3 Silicon Dust tuners.
I have one channel that the Ceton tuners simply cannot tune but work fine on the SD tuners (Signal issue, not a MC issue).

I know I can force this one channel to use one SD tuner, but can I point this channel to a GROUP of tuners?

Also, does forcing it to use a tuner (or group), does that apply to live tv AND recording?

Probably a question best left for Yaobing, but;

I know you can set a preference for a particular tuner by channel in "Manage Channels", but I don't think that forces MC to use that tuner. If the tuner isn't available, MC will try to use another tuner.

Also, if MC is forced to use another tuner, I believe that it will try to use a tuner from the same "Tuner Profile". So if the Ceton and SD tuners are in different Tuner Profiles, then your requirement would be met. But I think Tuner Profiles need to be defined by the tuner type, i.e. ATSC, Card Card, DVB-T, etc., rather than the brand, so setting up separate profiles may cause issues.

I know Yaobing has said before that there should be only one profile, for example, for ATSC tuners. However, there was some discussion around grouping, similar to your question.

Currently only one tuner profile can be created for all CableCARD tuners (Ceton and SiliconDust).

Only one tuner can be assigned to a channel.  As  RoderickGI mentioned, this is not exclusive assignment.  MC will use the assigned tuner if it is idle.

Since you only have one such channel that needs a particular group of tuners, you can assign one SD tuner to the channel, and then put that SD tuner at the bottom of the ordered tuner list.  That way, the chance of that particular tuner being used to tune to other channels is slim since you have so many tuners.

Thank you for the information. Will do as suggested until tuner groups of same type feature is possibly added but....

What does MC do when more than one machine (server or clients) tries to access the same channel (for live tv)? Use separate tuners? or all machines share/use one tuner?

For example- I am watching channel 712 on the server. I go up to the bedroom and turn on channel 712 on the client. How many tuners are used? sharing or?

Because if they do not share the tuner, then the moment the client tries to get channel 712 bad things will happen, because it will use the Ceton tuner, which will crap out.

The tuner is shared.

That would have been really easy to test, once you had the above set up. I thought the tuner was shared, but just tested it myself to be sure.

The tuner "Show Status" shows the State as "Watching & Serving clients".

One more thing.  In order to have all clients sharing the same tuner with the server, you must disable all tuners on the clients.  If you do not, clients will try to use locally available tuners, which means they will end up using your Ceton tuners.

Ah, very good info. Would have completely messed that up!
