When does MC21 check for a TV recording folder ?
« on: January 21, 2016, 04:50:59 pm »

I rebooted my PC that records television this morning.

At that point, the hard drive which is specified in Television as the location for recording, was not connected (I had disconnected it to use the USB connection for a one-time backup).

I had left myself a note to connect it up prior to the start of the next scheduled recording, and did so.  I checked in Windows Explorer and the drive was present and available.

But the recording did not occur.

It has previously occurred without problem (a daily recording rule), so it seems likely to have been due to the disconnected hard drive.   So, I am guessing that it checks for the existence of the recording folder on startup, perhaps?  (Rather than at start of the recording?)

Actually, it is the opposite.  MC does a write check at the start of a time-shifting / recording session, and returns an error if it fails the test.  The problem is that on a scheduled recording, most likely unattended, the error is unnoticed.  Another time when MC test disk write is when exiting Television property page.  That is when the user is actively doing something so the error will be noticed.

"noticed"?  By who or what?  That explanation doesn't make a whole lot of sense (to me).

It is not an explanation.  It is a recognition of a problem.  The problem is the the user does not notice there is a problem so recording fails to happen.

And there is no capability of a log file for recording errors, correct ?

No, other than the regular log file.

It is on my to-do list.

I haven't tried all DVR's - but I have never come across one without a log of recording actions.

Every user wants to know why their favorite program was not recorded.
