Getting Ready to Win7 > Win10 (nuke WMC) on Server Questions
« on: January 22, 2016, 10:27:41 am »

Congratulations to me  ;D  I have purchased a MC license and I've got things running pretty smoothly. Although, I'm still hoping for manual commercial skip and commercial markers in timeline, I am fully ready to say goodbye to WMC7. My Clients are already Win10 and I want to get the Server on Win10 soon. I will definitely make manual copies of channel icons, custom cover art, custom skin background files... but concerned what will happen to the tuner setup, guide setup, and assigning channel icons, recording rules, etc when I do the OS upgrade? Do over  :'(

Backup your library in MC, making sure you also backup the settings in the process.  After you install W10, just do a library restore.  I think you will be fine.  Well in the worst case scenario, if you have to do it over again, the second time should be easier  ;D

I'm pretty sure that you will have to reinstall MC, even if you reinstall the same version you had before the upgrade. Then restore the MC backup. Even if you do an in-place upgrade of Windows. At least this is what was reported in early Windows 10 upgrade threads. Lots of programs need to be reinstalled after an in-place Windows 10 upgrade, based on what I have read.

Unless you are doing a clean Windows 10 install, you shouldn't have to separately save all the various image files. But of course it wouldn't hurt to have a copy, and you should have a full backup of your original boot drive before the upgrade, in case you need to recover anything lost.

Yeah, if you are doing an upgrade, all you should have to do is re-install MC.  All settings should remain intact.  I upgraded to Win 10 a while ago and had no issues.

Like others said though, be sure to backup everything just in case.

If you are doing a fresh install, then that is a different story!

I will say that some of the default drivers that Windows 10 will install are not good, so I would suggest upgrading both GPU and NIC drivers when finished.  I had a situation where Wake on LAN was broken until I updated the drivers for the NIC (on 2 different hardware sets), and the performance of the Intel HD GPU was a bit subpar.

You can manually do a back up by going to "File>Library>Back Up Library" at any time.
And MC automatically backs up the library periodically. When I do a lot of editing, I do a manual backup - just in case. Otherwise I just let MC do it on its schedule.

What is the schedule?  How do I find it?

Options>File Location>Program Files>Library Backups

I know that the library is backed up automatically at the beginning of the month. It is also backed up intermittently on ~weekly basis but I don't know the logic behind it.

Can anyone confirm whether MC Server is any more stable (less crashes) in Win10 than Win7 ?

Clean install of Win10 on Server machine is done. Restored JR library from backup. These settings did not restore:
- custom Theater View theme
- guide channel icons
- guide channel order
- Theater View zoom level
- 90% of the series cover art

Hoping a clean install will be a good thing!

The biggest problem, IMO, with Win10 is that the  video card drives are not yet fully developed. When we get into pushing the limits of video with madVR and 3D, the drivers show up being glitchy. I'm sure that over time the manufacturers (i.e. NVidia, etc.) will get the bugs worked out, but currently there are a lot of reported problems tracing back to bad drivers.

I upgraded all my machines to win10 and I have not had many problems, but knowing what I do now, I would have stayed with win 7 (or 8.1) for another year.

Sage advice. I am leaving it as long as I can, but I still want the free upgrade, and that will expire in July, so I will have to bite the bullet soon.

First "crash". Watching live tv (comcast music station), pressed esc a few times to drop out of theater mode and got a windows message pop up "not responding" so I clicked close program. Tuner did not release, had to reboot it. MC log file:
