Playlist Sorting When Streaming To PS4
« on: January 31, 2016, 12:30:56 pm »

I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've got MC set up to be a DLNA server to my PS4, and it plays audio and video just fine. The problem is that regardless of what playlist I play, the PS4 sorts the tracks alphabetically and plays them in that order. It doesn't matter if it's an album or a playlist I have created. Anyone have any insight on this strange phenomena?

You can probably only change that (if at all) on the PS4.

Thanks JimH. I was afraid of that.  :-\

If you are pushing normal tracks to the PS by means of UPNP mechanisms, then MC would be pushing just one (or at most two) tracks at a time. So it there would be nothing to sort. Or are you pushing the M3U or PLS file itself?

Neither as far as I know. If I browse to a playlist on the PS4 and view it, it is sorted alphabetically, and ultimately, played in alphabetical order as well. I haven't tried the "push" approach, although that seems counter productive in using the PS4 as a DLNA player.

If you use the PS to browse and pull tracks, then as Jimh said, the sort order on the PS is defined by the PS..
However if you use MC to browse and push tracks to the PS, then the sort order is determined by MC..

The PS4 being stupid and sorting alphabetically every folder, the only way to preserve order is a hack on the media server side
to return a list of item whose alphabetical sort is identical to the desired order.

For example, for a music album, it would work with item titles like this:

01 - My cool track 1
02 - Another cool track 2 that the PS4 would but before 'My cool track 1' without this hack
...
110 - Track 10 but cannot use '10' as the prefix as it would come after track 1 alphabetically
111 - ...
...
220 - Track 20
...
