TV Problems in 21.0.45
« on: February 05, 2016, 09:33:51 pm »

Server HANG- would not respond to remote while watching a recording & two tuners were recording lost. Had to force MC to close which left 2 tuners locked up. Rebooted tuners to clear them, then restarted MC, recordings started right back up. Log file:

CRASH. Testing ability to watch a show while it's recording (on SERVER):

Recording tv show for about 30 minutes.
Went to guide, selected that show to start watching it.
Show starts playing, so I press Stop.
Guide comes back on screen.
Press up arrow to navigate to another channel and CRASH.
Windows pop up "not responding" makes me force MC to close which kills the server AND the recording of the show.
Tuner is locked on that channel, so have to hard reboot the tuner.
Start up MC and it begins recording the show again.

Another crash. Seems like every couple days. This time happened while I was at work so have no idea what or why. Log file:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B82GqdDf8HSyZjdRaWMyb1N6Wkk/view?usp=sharing

I really wish MC was stable and the recording engine/Server should be completely separate from the GUI so that when the Theater View or Standard view or whatever crashes, the recording engine is NOT affected and the tuners are not locked up. Then all you have to do is restart the GUI, not the whole recording engine and reboot the tuners. Is there any chance this can ever be possible?

I really wish MC was stable and ...
It would be nice if you could reserve judgment about where the fault lies until we all understand the problem.  MC is pretty stable.

If I recall correctly, you're running 6 tuners.  They all have drivers.  etc.

I think anyone would agree that separating the gui from the recording engine/server would be a much improved way to structure MC.

I hate make comparisons but I ran WMC for over two years with these exact tuners. If/when WMC gui crashed, the recordings continue/finish properly and all the next scheduled recordings happen, because the recording service/engine is not affected when the gui crashes.

So far no information points to the tuners/drivers being the cause of the crashes. What is crippling this software is that- when the crashes occur on the Server, it causes the media service to shut down which leaves the tuners hung "in use" and all further recordings do not happen unless/until a human intervenes.

ALL of the crashes are in Theater View. Already provided log files from server and now clients. Can't blame on "graphics driver" issue because of the diversity of the machines:

Server- Win7 nvidia gt640
laptop client- Win10 intel HD4400
2x clients- Win10 radeon 5450

More crash log files (two in a row from radeon 5450 client last night):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B82GqdDf8HSyb3F2U1FkQTRjQXM/view?usp=sharing
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B82GqdDf8HSyUExvMHN1Z1NDMEk/view?usp=sharing

I guess my only hope right now is to NOT run Theater View at all on the Server machine if I want all my recordings to happen normally. Sadly that means throwing more money at the situation- buy a client for my main living room tv, set it right next to the Server (that I can't use to watch tv without risking crashing the recording engine). At least if the client crashes the recordings will continue on the Server.

I was looking at one of the Logs and it looks to me (not that I know anything about reading logs) like the crash may be related to "memory operations". Line 2189890 through 2189922

I would do a memory test (using Memtest 86+ http://www.memtest.org/ or

use the built in Windows Memory diagnostics tool. to do this, "Start the Windows 10 Memory Diagnostics Tool via Run-Dialog [Windows-Logo]+[R] and the command: mdsched.exe! Select "Restart Now" and check for problems, the Memory Diagnostics Tool will run automatically when you restart the Windows 10."

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer ).

EDIT: I just see "memory" and "data buffering" in the log before the crash - it could just be the crash dump process is what I'm seeing. But it wouldn't hurt to test your memory either way.

I know I have harped on this before, and currently, I am not having any crash issues, but making the recording of TV a service is absolutely the right thing to do.

I have moved my Server to just that (in other words, I don't use it to watch TV, it is a headless PC in my closet), and I watch TV only on clients.  I still get a crash every once in a while...but it is now every 2-3 months, not every 2 weeks.

I was looking at one of the Logs...
Which log? The latest 2 from the client or one of the previous from the Server?

The crash logs point to different things.  It is hard to pin point to a specific problem.

Are you using the same Theater View skin on both server and clients?  What are they?

What file were you playing when the client last crashed?  Can you share that file?

Theater View skin is same on all machines- Obsidian.

Can't remember exactly which file I was playing on the Client but it was a recorded tv show ts file (too large to upload). MC crashed twice in a row, so I rebooted the PC and then it played perfectly fine. Noticed when I did the reboot, Win10 applied some updates.

I know I have harped on this before, and currently, I am not having any crash issues, but making the recording of TV a service is absolutely the right thing to do.

Plans in motion to setup a MC Server that won't be used for any playback, period.

This really is the 99% solution.  I made the switch about a year back, and everything works much better (with respect to TV, but also other things) if the server/recorder isn't a machine you watch TV on (or interact with at all). I've been much happier since I moved my MC server to a dedicated box that's only a server/recorder.

MC can do virtually everything, but it works much better if you don't try to make one instance do everything at once  ;D

Since back in MC20, watching Television during a recording will crash the machine.

If you mean watching the same program you're recording, I have seen occasional hangs or crashes while doing that, but not consistently.  I will say that it will often ruin the recording even if there's no crash, so we have a standing policy of not trying to watch things while they're recording.  That's a definite "weak spot" in the TV support, you're right.

Wish I was this handy. Can you share?

And maybe help create one to reboot my tuners, because they tend to get hung "in use" whenever MC server crashes.

Sure, I can share the scripts.  the one that re-launches MC works great, but only if it just dis-appears...IE: no crash warning.

The auto hot key script on the other hand needs some tweaking...I need MC to crash one more time so I can get the window title...or if someone could send me the text in the title bar of a crash window on MC...as well as a screen shot of it.  Then I could close the crash notification window, which would then close MC, at which point within 45 seconds my vbs script will re-launch it.

Here is the vbs script that will start or restart MC.  Please note that you will need to change the text file path to whatever you want...basically, any time it starts MC, it will write the time and date into a log file.  Also, this won't work, unless the MC process in task manager is gone...so if there is a freeze in the GUI, or a crash window waiting for a click, the script will do nothing.

What it does is every 45 seconds, it looks in the running processes for 'Media Center 21', and if it doesn't find it, it launches MC21.

Code: [Select]
Dim i
Dim strComputer
Dim FindProc
Dim nIndex
Dim filesys

strComputer = "."

FindProc = "Media Center 21"

Set filesys = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Do

WScript.Sleep 45000
Set filetxt = filesys.OpenTextFile("C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\MC21 up log.txt", 8, True)

Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
    & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colProcessList = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
    ("Select Name from Win32_Process WHERE Name LIKE '" & FindProc & "%'")

If colProcessList.count<1 then
     Dim objShell
     Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject( "WScript.Shell" )
     objShell.Run("""C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 21\Media Center 21.exe""")
     Set objShell = Nothing
     filetxt.WriteLine("MC21 restarted on " & now)
End if

filetxt.Close
Set objWMIService = Nothing
Set colProcessList = Nothing

Loop

Save this as a .vbs file.

Once I have the auto hot key script working to close the crash notification, I will post that as well...with both of these scripts running, the system should auto restart for everything but a GUI freeze...

If you change this to use an MCWS "alive" call then I think, but obv it is difficult to test, this would cover both cases (gui freeze and crash).

I would like to try this but one thing I am not clear on.   How do I control the client instance on my TV monitor using the JRemote on the iPhone?  You usually connect JRemote to a server via the access key but I will be looking at the 10 foot display on the TV from the client and apparently there is no access key for the client alone, right?  So how would I control the client Theater View screens from the iPhone? Through the server?

Client's have their own access keys that you can use to control them.  I can't speak to the television part of it as I navigate theater view with a plain old IR remote, but I use JRemote to play music on clients on the time, I just use the client's access key.

Thank you.  Now if I may ask another question.

Can I use the old server library database to restore to the new one so I don't have to reimport all the media?  Paths of media are the same.  [never mind - I figured it out]

Went over a week without server crash, until tonight. Was just recording 5 tuners, top of the hour when some were ending, some where beginning. Theater view just sitting at the main menu, no movement of mouse/remote, suddenly started getting a box popping up on the screen "unspecified error" with "ok" selection. Looked like it was going to crash so didn't do anything until saw the spinning mouse go away, then pressed "ok". Same box popped back up, pressed ok, repeated 10+ times so exit out of theater view and it continued while in standard view. Media Server service was gone from taskbar, could not get out of the "unspecified error" loop so rebooted the PC and the tuners (that were locked up).

I'm kinda worried that if I do set up a client to watch tv, then I would never have seen this problem happening on the server. Unless I rig a monitor or something on the server.

I also have crashes here in there especially when accessing JRiver from a client PC... It's not THAT bad and it has been fairly stable lately but I wish some improvements would be made on this.
One thing I noticed is when you make config changes or play with your TV setup you're looking for trouble...I now take the habit of a restart of JRiver or even a reboot...

I definitely had "less" crashes with Sage and they would pretty much only happen on the GUI and hardly never on the service side...So my point here is if they were 2 different processes the recordings wouldn't be affected by a crash?

I will keep a close eye on when crashes happen and send out logs...On a positive note My TV experience with MC21 is definitely getting better and better!

@muzicman why not just use the Windows Service Recovery feature as per the snapshot attached? (I just noticed it reverted back to default possibly after an update?). Any way to changes defaults to enable restarts?

This saved me a few times the recording will just restart after a crash automatically...

I wasn't aware that it was actually running as a service (mostly because I just didn't take the time to look).  I thought services would start up without having to log in, and I was never able to get that to work with MC, so I assumed it wasn't running as a service...

Did some reading of your log.

So far, reading the log backward, the first error I saw was an attempt to record America's funniest home video failed on HDHomerun Prime.  A few seconds later, a few other recordings ended, freeing up some tuners.  AFV was able to record on a Ceton tuner.  Toward the end of the log, there were five recordings going on.

Does this match what you experienced?

Unfortunately the log does not give more detail about why the HDHomerun tuner1 failed to record.  Could you, or anyone in your household, be using the tuner on another computer?

No, MC TV recording is not run on a service.

Media Server is not the same as Media Center Service.  TV recordings are done with Media Server (meaning Media Center without the usual GUI).  Media Center Service is different.  It has much lighter tasks to perform I believe.

Yes, that is matching what happened.
No, no other computers using any tuners (all tuners dedicated to MC Server), and not playing any videos at all on any clients. Everything was idle except server doing recording.

After rebooting PC and Ceton, recordings resumed and were normal the rest of the night. Even saw some use the HDHR Prime (which I did not reboot).

Thanks.

So if I'm reading this correctly if MC crashes we will lose any future recordings unless we manually restart it?

In my case I never saw a GUI crash without the Server also crashing.

That's scary...Any way to make the Service a little smarter and have it take on the task of making sure recordigns are restarted? Or ideally have the service handle the recordings so that when the GUI crashes recordings remain untouched?

There was another similar post on this where someone was suggesting to set the recovery as per above and I was kind of convinced that the recordings would restart on their own..I guess I was wrong...

thx

I agree. I was confused about these statements as well.

If I was wrong in that thread you linked to, it is disappointing that I wasn't corrected. I'm sure I have been told that the Service starts recordings previously, or calls Media Server to start the process.

Also, when MC Server and MC Client are running on my HTPC, I only see two processes running in Windows Task Manager and Services. The Client interface and the service. Sometimes I see a third process when background tasks are being run, but that is the JRWorker process, which is a separate executable. If I close the MC Client interface I am sure recordings still start normally, when only the service is visibly running.

If I get a chance I may look into this, but clarification would be appreciated.

I agree... I also have an easy way to make MC crash.  I just play around the visualization and that usually does it.

I was also pretty sure the service was restarting The Media Server and may have resumed some recordings after a crash... I'll play around with this and post back.

Just ran a little test...
1. Started a recording
2. Went to the audio pane to play some audio files and without doing anything MC21 just crashed...
3. The JRiver service is still running but the recording has been stopped!!!
So unless I restart manually I will definitely lose my recordings...Not good :'(

Usually when my Server hangs/crashes happen, it appears that the files are still being written to and the tuners are stuck in use. I can't do anything until I bring up task manager and kill the process (it's at that point when the recording actually stops but the tuners do NOT release). If I'm not there to kill the process, it will just continue to record on those tuners for hours and hours and fails to fire off any more upcoming recordings. So intervention from a human is needed to: kill the hung process, reboot the tuners, restart MC.

It could be that what I have seen is that a program continues to record after MC becomes unresponsive (I really don't see a "crash" where the UI dies often enough to call it that, but I have seen a few "this program has become unresponsive, wait or close messages from Windows), but I haven't left it long enough to realise that the recording process will continue forever, and future recordings won't start.

tzr916, when you say "kill the process" I assume you mean the "Media Center 21.exe" process, and that you don't need to kill the service called "Media Center 21 Service", which is associated with the "JRService.exe" process? Note that the process called "JRService.exe" is only visible if you click the "Show processes from all users" button on the Task Manager Processes tab.

We should try to be clear when talking about which process and/or service we are talking about when we discuss this topic, other wise it just becomes confusing.  8)
Oh, and we should differentiate between a hang, where MC becomes unresponsive, and a crash, where the MC User Interfaces closes unexpectedly.  8) 8)

Yes, I have to kill Mediacenter21.exe using windows task manager because it's hung. Then when I kill Mediacenter21.exe, the Media Server service shuts down too (taskbar icon disappears just by rolling my mouse over the icon).

I haven't yet experienced capture cards being stuck recording forever but that brings up a good point about crashes or hangs...Sometimes MC21 does not actually crash but maybe doing something in the background...But there's no way to tell and when we see that Windows pop up you're tempted to just kill it...

It would be nice to know if it's (from past experience):

1. Still busy with loading the library or doing whatever else...
2. Read/write issues du to AV or else should also pop-up some kind of read/write error messages instead of just crashing/hanging forever without us knowing what's going on...

Glynor has written a bunch of stuff about hangs and crashes, including two Wiki articles;
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Solutions

Neither are completely comprehensive, but that is the nature of diagnosing such issues. Do a search of the forum for posts written by Glynor and including the words "hang crash" for more information.

You could also get Process Explorer and run it in the background constantly, so that is something happens you can check it and see if there is anything obvious, like CPU, GPU or memory usage. That and Windows Task Manager and Resource Monitor may show up what is causing a hang. Maybe not though.

I just played a video and the MC Service didn't use any additional CPU power, memory, or GPU power. It just had a couple of threads running. So it does look like the service just looks after IR commands, and similar jobs. In fact I was able to kill the service and MC kept running fine on my Client PC. I still haven't tested recordings though.

But it looks like the "Media Center 21.exe" process can run with its GUI, or headless, and it does all the work including managing recordings.

I have full confidence in my server's hardware and my networking setup. Really not looking forward to it, but maybe it's time to finally do the win7 to win10 upgrade that I've been putting off. Just not so sure doing the win10 upgrade will be the miracle that I need. Have a sneaking feeling that I will still end up having to run the server headless (not watching tv on it).

Server crash 12:01:40 AM half way through recording "Jimmy Kimmel". This morning that channel was locked in use on the Ceton tuner, had to reboot it to release tuner, but it did not do the all night continuous recording to hard disk this time. MC Log and Windows log:

The crash seemed to have occurred in Theater View.  I am having trouble understanding why it did.

Just to confirm, did the crash occur when no one was using the computer?  You kept Theater View running?

Yes, Theater View runs on server all the time (unless I am doing maintenance).
Correct, no human was interfacing with the server because we were all in bed sleeping.
No clients were connected or even powered on at the time either.

No.
And we always press STOP on any live tv or other playback before we go to bed. So it was literally just sitting there idle (recording one tuner) when it crashed.
