Best 2016 h/w platform for JRiver client in second room
« on: February 26, 2016, 05:37:54 pm »

I’m running JRiver MC21 on a purpose built W10 computer in our main room and am now interested in setting up a small footprint unit in the bedroom that can act as an audio / video client that uses the JRiver library from the main room set-up. The main considerations are a) small footprint, b) silent or at least very quiet and c) an Ethernet port (as find that cable is more reliable than wireless). I’m thinking that the unit will also run W10 as I’m familiar with that OS but if it runs as Linux / Android etc. in an “appliance” mode where I don’t need to do maintenance then that would be fine. The question, then, is what in 2016 are the relevant h/w options? Is the answer still an Intel NUC (and if so then what models are relevant) or are there now better options?

Have you checked out the new Intel PC Stick?  You'd need a USB > LAN adapter as it only does wi-fi out of the box, but may be worth a look.

My preference is for wired Lan / internet connection due to double brick house. How would something like a Asrock J1900 m-ITX board with inbuilt dual Celeron processor work? Is this enough processing power given that I don't need Red October graphics processing? Or is an i3 or i5 processor required for a Windows platform?
