Converting mp3 to mp3 with lower bitrate doesnt work
« on: March 01, 2016, 08:35:51 am »

Hi guys,
I am trying to convert my music to lower bitrates when synchronizing with my phone, because I have limited space on it, but I would like to have the files remain in mp3 format.
The problem is, when I use the mp3 encoder in the handheld converter options and synchronize, nothing happens, the mp3s are uploaded to my phone as they are, not being converted beforehand. If I use, e.g. the Windows Media encoder, they all get converted to 128kbit/s .wma before synchronizing.
I read somewhere that in an older version there was an option to "always convert", but this seems to be missing in 21.

Any suggestions on how to solve my problem?

Thanks in advance, Thomas

Can noone help me?
If there is no other option, I would like to install an external Encoder. How can I do that?
If I can not get it to work with mp3s, what would be the best alternative file format for an android smartphone?

Have you set:

Handheld options>Audio>Conversion>Audio>Mode: Specific Output Format
Handheld options>File, Paths, & More>supported types, make sure mp3 is the only format listed.

If so, is the mp3 still not being transcoded?

Yes I did all of that, had many file formats under supported types before, changed it to only mp3 now, but they still only ge uploaded, not converted.
Does one of you also convert mp3s to mp3s successfully? If so, then maybe I should try an other version of JRiver, but if its just not possible I will convert them to some other format and have them on my phone without the artist names...

Are you sure you're using "Specified Format"? ...and not "Specified format only when necessary" ?

Brian.

Just did a quick test and it's working for me.

Only file type selected is MP3 and it downconverted 320 MP3 files to about 128 kbps.

Did you set this up as per my snapshot?

AND Make sure you select under Audio Mode: Specified output format only when necessary (including high bitrates)

Are you using a conversion cache?

Sorry to ask again but when it was not downconverting the issue was this:

Under Audio Mode: Specified output format only when necessary (including high bitrates).

As an FYI I'm not using any conversion Cache under Options-> File Location.

What is the approximate bitrate of the original mp3 file?

1. I did use a conversion cache, but that seems to not have been the issue
2. I did try to set it as "Specified output format" and "Specified output format only when necessary (including high bitrates)"
3. Bitrate is mostly about 320kbit/s

It looks like I got it working though, now that I installed JRiver Media Center 20, I dont know why but that seems to have fixed it, even though I uninstalled and reinstalled v21 twice and that didnt help.
For now the problem seems fixed, thank you guys for your help though!

I think that's what did it: (including high bitrates)....as it happened to me a few times...
