Transcoding LAME ABR mp3
« on: August 15, 2003, 06:26:59 am »

If you do not know about:
Unlike pure VRB who do not care about the size of the song ,ABR is kind of VRB but in the size frame.

ABR 192 will give you an mp3 the size or close to the side of a CBR 192 mp3 , but in VRB.

I found it on a site where i buy music.
Liked the idea and ripped TONS of cds in this format...BUT
I cannot play mp3 cds with Lame ABR on it on ANY player ,3 different CD/Cd mp3 players ,DVD player.

The same for  all people around me. ABR is useless outside of my computer.

I may re-rip the tons of cds.
But i have quite a lot of ABR mp3  i payed for. I do not want to spend another $60-100  to buy them again in 'regular' format.

So ,here the question : to which format transcode getting the 'less bad' results?
To 192 CBR ,to 192 VRB?

TRANSCODING IS A PLAGUE is one of my credo.....So no need to elaborate about it.
Just to tip about the 'less bad ' transcoding solution in your opinion.

What i told about ABR is what i saw on some forums.

If you play an ABR 192 and alt-preset - the same song of cause- look like that the alt-preset rate change more often than the ABR.

The weird thing is that ALL machines not playing ABR ,play VRB fine.....

I just wasted hours and hours and blank cds using many burning programs , before i started to think about this ABR problem.

PS: Alt preset standart will do ?

Thank you.

In fact ,i plan to keep this ABR on my computer.

People around me do not have anything close to a good stereo system and ,if for me , it means playing it when outside on the dicman .
So i will just convert some of them , keeping ,of cause, the original file, and check the results.

I found a burner who allow you to set a convertion to files before burning it to cd.
All of it on the fly.
I would prefer to spend $14 on this program than buy again all the songs.....

Will see it tomorow

Few posts are missing here ,WHY?

I did some test.
It is ok- I mean it is acceptable if you have this kind of problem.
On a discman it sounds quitte ok.

If you play the transcoded files very loud throught the stereo , maybe the sound is not as the original sound.
Not even sure about it.

Anyway , i will burn mps cds using the dbPowerAmp burning software and keep the original ABR files on my computer
