JRemote Android Chromecast Audio -> Transcoding
« on: March 10, 2016, 01:21:08 pm »

Details: I'm using JRemote on my Nexus 7 and streaming to a Chromecast Audio device. I'm trying to stream FLAC files natively and I have the "Use native audio format" option enabled. Yet, everything is being transcoded to MP3.

Question: Is it possible to stream to a Chromecast Audio device without transcoding FLAC files?

Does it support FLAC?  I did a quick search and didn't find it.

Yes, it support FLAC at 44.1, 88.2 and 96 kHz. I can stream to it with a couple other apps without transcoding, but JRemote keeps transcoding to MP3.

Hmmm, what happens if you set it to always convert to PCM 16-bit or PCM 24-bit? Doesn't that convert it to WAV (and should be a lossless conversion)?

Good question. I have it set to always play the original format and 24 bit pcm. But, I don't know if those setting in the DLNA setup really matter. This isn't DLNA.

This is not currently supported. I briefly tried to make it work, but it didn't want to work nicely, so I put it off for more thorough testing later.

OK, thanks so much for getting back to me. This saves hours of trying to figure it out :~)

I am glad I have not purchased an Android Tablet because I expected it to cast FLAC.

Computer Audiophile, I read the nice write-up of JRiver and JRemote regarding streaming on the CA site.  Here is the link for any to read:

FLAC Streammming!

Computer Audiophile,

I have my iPhone 6s plus and iPad set up to stream (up to 24 bit / 96 kHz) FLAC files from JRiver to my Chromecast Audio device.  The Chromecast Audio Device is connected to powered Definitive Technology Incline Speakers.  The result is wonderful and works perfectly thanks to your detailed CA Tutorial that you posted on the CA website on March 11.

http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/685-streaming-around-globe-or-around-home-jriver-media-center/

I used BubbleUPnP Server as you suggested and the Chromecast Audio Device shows as a "Chromecast Audio DLNA zone" on JRemote.  I could not be happier as I have wanted this capability for several months.

THANKS!

I learned another beneficial technique while reading your initial post in this thread.  I like the way you presented your question.  First you gave the details regarding the situation by using the header "DETAILS".  Next, you specifically ask your QUESTION under the header "QUESTION".  I suggest that more people use your format when requesting SUPPORT as it clarifies what is being asked.

As you said on your site, JRiver is a POWERFUL product.  I really love it!
