MP3 Pro
« on: August 20, 2003, 10:56:21 am »

MP3 Pro ? Now here's a debate that's probably been on this message board before - but hey, some of us are a bit slow catching on.

What is all the hype about with MP3 Pro?

Does it actually half the physical file size as claimed by some, without sacrificing quality?

Is there going to be a LONG TERM future for it ?

Does Media Center support it ? and if so, is there a plug in to assist in the file conversion?

How long does the average song conversion take ? - my playlist is currently at 17 827 mp3 songs, and i can't be bothered if it's gonna take me a year to do it all.

?

No, there is not an MP3pro plug-in for MC, due mainly to the licensing costs of the format, I would guess.

I think you can playback MP3pro files with any player that supports MP3, but you only gain the benefits of MP3pros sound quality at smaller file sizes if you have a player that specifically supports that format. AFAIK, there are very few portable or hardware players that do and a lot of software players don't either, again, due mainly to the licensing costs.

Also, converting MP3 to MP3pro would probably not be a good idea anyway. Essentially, what you would be doing is recompressing a file that has already been compressed. This would most likely result in a loss of sound quality that eliminates any benefit of using MP3pro in the first place.

Thanx a lot Rob, you seemed to confirm my suspicions.

Another puzzling thing i have, do you know of a program or maybe media center has the feature.

I am often asked by friend for a list of my albums (as I don't just collect random mp3's from download sites - i actually buy the cd's) and short of trying ANOTHER useless directory program, how can i get a list of my albums in my playlist ?

eg g: A/ACDC/ACDC - Highway To Hell
is what i can currently print with the progs i got.

What I want is

ACDC - Highway To Hell
ACDC - High Voltage
etc
;D
