MC21 Audio is completely distorted
« on: April 15, 2016, 01:46:31 pm »

Audio is completely distorted, almost impossible to hear what is playing. I have JRiver for several years on more than one computer with no problems including this HP PRoliant small server with Windows server 2008 R2 that acts as a music server only. After installing JRiver MC21(some time ago), currently 21.0.50, this issue started.
The server itself isnt doing any other jobs. On my laptop this is not a problem.

Setup:
Hegel HD2 DAC
WSAPI audio device
DSP output format enabled and all sample rates set to 96kHz.

Other than that, no special settings

Apparently USB driver issue. Put the USB plug from the DAC to a different port (different socket on the motherboard). Installed new driver and automatically updated from Windows update. Sound is ok now. Havent tried to switch to the USB port with teh problem though.

Just to point it out, but running MC on Windows Server OSes is unsupported.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

usually you need proprietary drivers for asynchronous USB DACs to work best ... your HD2 is not listed on their website anymore, but there are specific drivers for their newer DACs .. this could definitively cause an issue if you installed a driver for the wrong DAC -- their HD12 and HD25 are not at all the same. I'd ask them personally what driver to use to make sure (and/or if you should be on WASAPI or Asio)

Also you might want to test if forced up-sampling in JRiver is the best for this DAC. Some friends of mine have had issues with older DACs that are connected in USB but are not asynchronous.  They found it the best compromise to send the native sample rate to the dac (setting to no change up to 96kHz and down-sampling to 96k when original media is over these sample rates.
