Why does some cover art keep disappearing?
« on: April 18, 2016, 09:38:37 am »

I've noticed this for quite a few months now and I have no idea why it's happening.

I have a library that contains a load of BDs (ripped to the folder structure) and DVDs (ripped as mkv). BDs are ripped by mediacenter and the "get tv/movie info" feature is used to provide metadata. The data is ripped to a mapped network drive and everything seems to work just fine except I've noticed that a small number (2-3 per month?) BDs lose the cover art. No other metadata disappears, just the art. The behaviour is not BD specific, it is seemingly at random as to which film loses the image.

Does this sound like a familiar problem to anyone? Any pointers as to options to check? I'm not sure what other info to provide here.

Do the cover art JPG files disappear too?  Or just MC's link to the cover art?  I.E., can you resolve these by doing Cover Art > Quick Find in file/cover art directory ?  Or, can you see the JPG file in the same directory with the movie file?

I'm not sure what would cause either behavior, but it seems important to know if the actual cover art file itself is being removed somehow.

(take with small pinch of salt as I'm not in front of that computer right now, will verify later)

As far as I have noticed, when using "get tv/movie info" on a BD ripped to to disk, jriver puts a file inside the ripped directory structure that contains the image. This file seems to go missing. NB: I was expecting those files to be in the Cover Art directory but they don't seem to be.

Nothing else, apart from the library server, touches that disk with write permissions. There are no users floating around doing random stuff on the OS either.

ha someone else we know just posted a problem with his thumbnails  ;)... just curious to see if this happened to you and Matt ... check Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails > Create thumbnails for videos .. did this gets switched off for some reason too??

Your BD cover art should be in the folder with the film .. regardless of the options .. this was also brought up by someone else so that shouldn't be the problem

Cover Art > Quick Find doesn't do anything

I took a directory listing of a BD that has this problem, then ran "Get Movie & TV Info" and then repeated the listing. Here's the diff

Code: [Select]
$ diff -w ~/before.log ~/after.log
2a3
> ./BDMV/index.jpg

to be clear, these are old files that haven't been touched by anything else in ages.

that thumbnail option is still set

So something inside or outside of MC is removing the JPG file.  I'm unclear why it's named "index.jpg" though.  I don't use ISOs, DVD structures, or BD structures to store movies.  Maybe this is because the main "movie file" in a BD structure is named "index.something" ?

yes index.bdmv is the library entry for a BD

I noticed another one had disappeared while collecting the above info so I reviewed the log looking for references to the relevant library item, I found the activity when jriver decided to rebuild the thumbnail. There is loads of the DLNA activity before and after this. The IP referenced in the log is a linux mediacenter client which is used for audio (99% internet radio) running effectively headless and controlled via jremote. I'm not sure why it would be talking about DLNA in that context?

I verified that these jpgs exist in my backups. The only plausible explanation at this point, as far as I can see, is that mediacenter is deleting these files. I don't see a way to prove this though or an obvious way to debug it further. Suggestions?

I've been ripping a few BD in the last nine months. Only five actually, now that I look. They all still have their "index.jpg" files and Cover Art shows correctly. I also get the Cover Art using "Get Movie & TV Info...".

I doubt that MC is deleting the files, but I wouldn't be surprised if something else is. Very possibly a security application. I can never make much sense of the MC logs, so can't really comment on what you have provided, other than to say there is nothing really obvious. I would understand if the thumbnail build overwrote the index.jpg file, but not just deleting it.

The best idea I can think of is that most web pages used to have the default file set as index.html, and also some used an image, named index.jpg. With all the scams, malware, Trojans and so on, some security software tried to prevent fake web servers being created on your system, to act as part of a BOT network or such. So they deleted any landing page/file, index.html, that they found, and probably also took out index.jpg. That could be what is happening I your case.

Or maybe your Linux MC Client has some web server components installed, or security software, and is scanning the disk and removing the index.jpg file, as part of a lost web server?

Is there any pattern to the ones that get deleted, like they are the movies you have watched?

If you really want to know what is deleting the file, and the network drive is running on a Windows Vista or later system, you may want to turn on Auditing for the directory or index.jpg files as per this thread:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/971e24e2-462e-41a8-a8ba-e39140508dc7/how-can-track-who-deleted-filefolder-from-windows-server-2008?forum=winserverfiles

Or maybe even run the trial of FileAudit mentioned in that thread to see if it captures anything. I don't know what the trial restrictions are though, and it isn't something you would want to buy for home use!

My linux MC clients don't mount those drives so it can't be caused by anything on those linux machines except some interaction between it and the windows MC server. The only time they mount those drives is when the backup script runs and the deletion events are not related to when that happens.

There is no such security software on the windows machine, it is dedicated to life as the MC server and HTPC.

I think any audit check would need to capture the process that initiated it rather than the user (which I think that windows auditing is about? not sure). I'm not sure if that is possible though.

FWIW there are ~300 BDs in here and 1 index.jpg goes missing every now and again so I'm not sure whether a collection of a few BDs is likely to see this problem. Of course if it is MC driven then it's probably some interaction between specific components that causes something to go AWOL, unless I find what the pattern is (or what drives it) then it may remain a mystery!

I think any audit check would need to capture the process that initiated it rather than the user (which I think that windows auditing is about? not sure). I'm not sure if that is possible though.

I think it would identify the User and Process involved in the deletion. I have to admit that I haven't used it in a long time. Also, you can define the audit by User or User Group, so you could limit it to the User MC runs under, or audit Everyone, and see what it does.

I just checked, and it doesn't seem that you can assign the audit settings to multiple selected files at once, so yes, the 300 BD plus only occasional files going missing would make finding the problem a bit of work.

I guess you could just use Windows Explorer to search for a find all index.jpg files for all 300 BD, which would be quick and easy, and set them to Read Only. That would stop them disappearing, if not fix the cause, and it may even give you a prompt when the file can't be deleted by whatever is trying to delete it.

PS: Part of the problem is that "index.jpg" is such a universally used, generic file name, that it could be almost anything doing some clean up of what it thinks is its own file, or some unnecessary left over file, or some threat. Renaming the movie file name through MC may fix that problem, as I think it will rename the Cover Art files as well. I'm not sure if that would break BD playback or not though...

Well, I just checked while doing some other stuff on MC, and you can't rename the files in a BD folder set. MC won't do it. Must be a protected and required structure and naming convention.

Not surprising really I guess. MC is doing the correct thing by stopping the renaming. I didn't dare try it outside MC to see if that worked. It would be really messy anyway, so not worth it.

perhaps I should just write a script that runs every hour, looks for a file go missing & if it sees one then grabs the jriver log file.

If you could identify the log record that actually deletes the index.jpg file, then the script could just save the log daily and search it for the record. No need to check hourly if any of those index.jpg files went missing.

The trouble is, there could be potentially lots of log records referencing index.jpg, and you would need to know the form of the deletion record in order to find it or them.

I've noticed this for some time now also.  I just noticed this evening that a lot of my video cover art and some .xml files have gone missing since this morning.  I noticed in the morning they were missing, so I did the 'get movie and tv info' and updated all the files in several seasons of Archer.  I came home to night to see if any more needed done, and one whole season now contains only the video files, and another season is missing 6 files.  I havent checked to see which files have gone missing yet, but NONE should be missing so it doesn't really matter which ones have disappeared.

Did anyone ever come up with a way to test/verify what is removing these files, and how to stop it?

My files all reside on an unRAID server, and have for the last several years.  No new version of unRAID has been installed for at least 6 months.

Bump!

Fast forward to 2020. Did this ever get resolved, or just die a natural death? I am having this problem now. I am running Media Center 25.0.115 (64 bit)
