Hi, I have J river running on a Linux mint system (old hardware) and on a new pc running windows 10. I am going to build a machine specifically to run JRiver, primarily for best quality playback of FLAC file to an external DAC. (Cainbridge audio Azure 850D) from an internal SSD and movies streamed from my NAS. The hardware isn’t an issue, it’s a purpose built hi end rig but when it comes to the OS then it becomes tricky! I love Linux mint, its simple, fast and it works. JRiver runs well but with limited functionality. Though I don't like windows 10, JRiver seems to work OK with much better functionality, I can still get an oem version of windows 7...........So if I go with windows, which would be the better option for a stable JRiver install, 7 or 10?

If you need / want the features you get in Windows, go with that. Otherwise the Linux version (as I'm sure you're aware) is already pretty great and getting better.

I run the linux version as a server and another install as desktop playback and both work great, but then I don't have high end gear connected to my linux PC so cannot comment as to playback quality etc.

If you're just listening to FLAC files, it won't matter much if it's Windows or Linux. But if you're wanting Theater View, then Windows would be the way to go.

As for a preference between 7 and 10, I'd choose 10 personally. But it likely doesn't matter there too much either.

My music NUC runs Windows 7, and I've had no trouble at all with it.

My HTPC NUC runs Windows 10. I started with Windows 7 but during playback of bluray files stored on a Seagate USB hard drive I'd consistently get 20 minutes in, the HD would go to sleep, and playback would stop. I tried all kinds of power settings, Seagate utilities, etc, but nothing helped. In desperation I let the NUC update to Windows 10 and I haven't had any trouble since then. I do get the Start menu problem, but it doesn't bother me at all because I leave the computer on 24/7 and use it only for MC 21 or Firefox. Since you're already running Windows 10 on another PC I see little to gain from digging up a copy of Windows 7.

For video purposes I personally still prefer 8.1 right now. 7 has some limitations in the desktop compositor that can be odd sometimes, and 10 is still a bit fragile for stable video playback for me. YMMV of course.

It appears the Windows 10 start menu can get broken while running JRiver and Windows 7 lacks the 3D support required for 3D playback.
So one could argue Windows 8.1 I guess.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think I'm going to get the hardware up and running, stick with Linux for a while then review the options again after a few months.
