Media Editor Encoding Problems
« on: February 07, 2003, 04:44:45 am »

Whenever I open an MP3 file in Media Editor and then "Save As" an MP3 using the MP3 encoder downloaded off of the JRiver web site, it saves it at something like quadruple the speed and a quarter of its original size even when I make no changes at all to the file.  When I play the file back, it sounds like the Chipmunks are talking!  I can't find any information on this problem anywhere.  I even completely uninstalled the software and then reinstalled it.  I have never run into this problem before.  I created this MP3 with Media Jukebox by recording it from an audiocassette.  I have done this exact same thing before without incident, but now I can't get it to work.  Anyone have any solutions?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a sample rate change somewhere in your chain.  Places to look are your sound card input settings smaple rate and the settings of your encoder. The sample rate should match, and is generally 44.1K, sometimes others use 48K. But if say it was recorded at 22K, and encoded to 48K, you'd get the chipmunks.

It's a CBR file that I am trying to save as a CBR file.  Where do I find the sample rate settings for the standard MP3 encoder that I downloaded from the JRiver web site?

I use MC9, so I can't say if it's different than MJ8 in this area...from MC9 there is apparently no way to choose sample rates when encoding MP3's other than through a command line (which I assume you're not using). If you converted a 22K sampled file (or an 8 bit for that matter), I believe the encoder will default to 16bit-44.1k when it encodes, which would also cause a chipmunk phenom. Let's say it was 8bit-22k encoded to16-44, then the song would be quadruple in speed.

If this is your problem (a low quality original encode) then your best option is going to be to resample the file after decoding and before encoding again, or re-encode (ack!) with the original specs.
