Upgrade to MC22 for $26.98
« on: May 10, 2016, 10:16:59 am »

If you own a previous version of Media Center, you can upgrade to MC22 (Windows or Mac) for $26.98.  A Master License Upgrade is $35.98.

Upgrade Instructions and Links

Early versions of MC22 are available now.

If you purchased MC21 after May 1, 2016, you received an MC22 license that will work with both versions.  Just install the latest version now and restore your license.

Download and install the program first.  Instructions for restoring your license are on our wiki.

If you haven't purchased a previous version of JRiver Media Center, the price is $49.98 for Windows or OSX, and $69.98 for a Master License.  Download and install first.  Then purchase from the Help menu in the program.

There likely won't be any sonic improvements in MC22 on Mac or Windows.  JRiver considers the sound quality part of JRiver MC to be essentially "complete". Which makes sense to me.  Once it's right, it's right.

Doesn't it make you wonder what these other companies are doing every time they say there have been sonic improvements in their software?  In particular, for most audiophiles that don't want to use DSP processing, what more is there to do?

I expect there to be some new features in MC22 on Mac and Windows (probably not the same ones).  Plus ongoing bug fixes, UI improvements, etc.  I'm speculating of course; I don't have any inside information other than hanging around these forums.

I keep supporting JRiver OSX development since v18. It's really to get bugs fixed and making sure that it works on Apple's annual OS releases.

Given this situation, don't you think, just maybe, it's worth considering a paid annual support model rather than calling it "upgrade"?

It's strange to advise customers to "upgrade" even the company itself doesn't know what functions/features will be implemented.

You can upgrade or not.  You can do it every year, or you can skip multiple years, then upgrade.

This might help:

I'm getting the message "Your license file is for a different product". Will it only work with MC 22? I presently use MC 21 for mac.

It's running on your MC21 license which is fine.  When MC22 becomes available, you can just download and install it.  Restore if needed.

Is it just me or does it only feel like a few months since MC21 was released! It was said the early builds would resemble MC20 but the promise of new and exciting features was mentioned.  ? So in theory we only get a 4 month window where we have a genuine upgrade before the whole process starts again. I think I will probably skip a version or two in the future. Then I might actually see enough changes/enhancements to warrant the upgrade.

Dont get me wrong its a great bit of software but I feel that yearly builds resemble apples phone upgrade policy with iphone X and iphone XS upgrades.

You can obviously keep using any version of MC for as long as you want.  It's "forever" software.  Which is really nice actually in today's world of software subscription models.

But I think you're being just a tiny bit unfair in your assessment.  I just checked and I downloaded MC21.0.3 on 8/19/2015 .  That's 9 months ago, almost to the day.  MC22 has not yet been released.  So we've had MC21 for 9 months now and probably will for another month.  So more like 10 months.

Plus, when MC21 shipped, it immediately had at least one big new feature:  Vastly improved video support.

I'm not trying to convince you to buy anything.  Far from it.  Just giving my opinion and my reasons for it.  Have a good day.  :)

I wouldn't be surprised if MC22 didn't ship until August, honestly. I think Jim said something to that effect somewhere here on the forums.

I can't see any reason to upgrade to version 22.
Progress has been too slow on version 21 for Mac and i fear it won't get better.

So i'll wait at least for version 23.

I'm more than happy with MC.

I originally bought it for its powerful database and metadata editing features. Beyond that, it offers more features than I ever expected to find in this type of software, wanting to just organize and listen to my audio files at the best possible quality. So now, I've started to organize my videos too and am enjoying better playback quality.

I'll buy every upgrade, if only to support the team of developers! Something like $20 every year, where's the problem?

With that constant demand for new features however, I only hope they are not going to overdo it one day, just like Microsoft liked to do (cram enough features in our software, and somebody will buy it).

Just over £1 GBP per month if you pre-order seems good value to me, so I've ordered the upgrade.  :)

Hi, I'm just wondering why we need to give a telephone number to upgrade, esp. when I'm paying using PayPal? Please don't get me wrong MC is great software that I use almost daily. I use MC through a DAC which sadly, means that I need to use a different player to just use my desktop speakers.

I use MC through a DAC which sadly, means that I need to use a different player to just use my desktop speakers.

You can use MC to talk to multiple sound devices at the same time, or independently.  I have several zones set up in MC:

1.  Headphones.  This zone is connected to my external DAC. That DAC connects to my headphone amp and my headphones.
2.  Desk Speakers.  This zone is configured to use the internal sound card in my Mac.  The sound card output is then fed to my (self powered) desktop speakers.

I can play to either zone any time I want.  I can even do both at the same time, though it doesn't make much sense to do so.

You can certainly do something similar if you'd like.  Or even run a Y cable off of the output of your DAC into your desktop speakers (if they are self powered).  Though you might have volume control issues depending on how your speakers control volume.   This is why I use the internal sound card; so I can electronically control volume to the desk speakers.

I bought MC21 on 2/5/2016 and I'm already being hit up for another $20 bucks?  Seems to me that there should be some sort of period of time where purchases are grandfathered in.

Nobody is being hit up for anything - upgrades are optional. If you're happy with the version you're using, just keep using it. :)

I ordered the Master version. It installed fine on my Mac, but I got this same message, "Your license file is for a different product," when I tried to install it on my Win 7 laptop. I tried downloading the mjr file again from the email, and got the same message.

Make sure you're using the latest JRiver Media Center 21 for Windows build. Currently this one: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=104983.0

That resolved it. Thanks!

BTW, I've been very happy with JRiver MediaCenter. I came from PureVinyl/PureAudio to MediaCenter, and find it much faster, and easier to use.

...upgrades are optional.

Same could be said for most upgrades but who among us would still be happy with our Win95 machines?  ;-)

So, is this JRiver's position?  If you buy a license and the next day a new version is released, you shouldn't care because you got what you paid for?  I'm hoping that "the next day" is an extreme case and of course JRiver would do the right thing in that case.  I'm just asking where the line is drawn.

A new version of MC won't be available until about mid-July and it won't be radically different at first.

The reason we offer this pre-order is to give people advance notice.  No matter where we draw the line, there will be some discontent.

Not radically different. So I assume that means that there will still be no support for the Nexus 6P or response to the thread on that topic?

UPDATE:  My bad. Buried deep in an old post in the Android sub-forum I found a post that says MC doesn't sync Android devices on a Mac because connectivity uses Android File Transfer.   There are other products that bypass this out of the box restriction using OSXFUSE. It just hasn't been done for MC.

Agreed. My only concern is that I almost miss the upgrade window each year because I don't frequent the forums. It would be nice if you gave a larger window of time for upgrades. Your product is very affordable.

For the discontented: I think of the new version of MC as beta for about 4 months anyway although each new version on the mac gets stable faster. It's a very small price to pay to keep current, or you can skip it. I also think of the upgrade as a way to provide feedback on the evolution of the product e.g. they'll only work on the latest version after a while.

Hi Jim: Is there any possibility that JRiver JRemote will one day very soon contain the words to the songs during playback. And possibly additional other data like Roon ?
Possibly this will help some people on the sidelines as to what the future holds.

Thanks, Steven

Ok, but my MC21 is already activated since 22/04. Sould i have to uninstall it?
The upgrade will be possible directly from the mc21?
I know that the activation key is valid for 15days after a purchase
Thats why i am asking this.

That may be, but it still has a windows-like interface.
And while I'm whining, I continue to expect that the Preferences pane would be under the Media Center menu item, and still have to remind myself that they are called Options and live under the Tools menu item. More etc. Again, I'm sure that shuffling the menu items to create a Mac interface would be easy. Although I suspect that providing the same menu structure for all versions is a conscious choice, it is not one I like. I haven't used windows since XP, and have no interest in ever returning to it.
