Its just an idea but why not create a view (I'm thinking this would have to be a theater view but, you could use it to browse music as well) where the skin is transparent so that the desktop background shows.  This would give the user a feel that he or she never leaves windows itself, and the media features are a normally part of the PC.  Essentially, when entering JRiver, it can skin from the windows background, or be entirely transparent, letting the user see the desktop itself.
