AlbumArtist versus Album Artist
« on: May 25, 2016, 01:28:23 pm »

Hi all,
I have ripped more than 2000 CDs using dBpoweramp so far have have more to go.
Now I see the Album Artist field is not showing up in JRiver.
I have been investigating this and I think dBpoweramp is using the tag 'AlbumArtist' to hold this information.

Can someone tell me if MC21 is using 'AlbumArtist' or 'Album Artist' for the tag to display?

Is it possible to tell JRiver to use 'AlbumArtist' if 'Album Artist' is empty?

Thanks,
Chip

You can add a custom tag if necessary.  You can also use MC to copy from one tag to another.

It might be simpler to rip with MC.

You can also very easily copy the tag [AlbumArtist] to the [Album Artist] field.
It's Move/Copy Fields in the library Tools menu.

In my experience though, dBpoweramp correctly tags the Album Artist field, and the import into MC is painless.

I am thinking that JRiver uses the [Album Artist] field as the tag. Is this correct?

I do not doubt this is mistake on my part at some time setting up dBpoweramp years ago when I started ripping CDs and I have not changed it since then. I can change dBpoweramp to create the tag but I want to be sure which tag is correct.

If I use the Move/Copy function from the Tools menu will it update the tags on my NAS or just in the JRiver library?

It should change the files, but you can do an "update tags from library" to make sure

It sounds like "update tags from library" will update my JRiver library with tags from the source data files. Is this correct?

Is there an option in JRiver that can turn the source data file update on or off?

Update tags from library will update the files from the library
Update library from tags will do the opposite

In the tools>import options you can check/uncheck "update for external changes" which will turn it on/off for watched folders.  There may be another option related but I'm not aware of it

you can also turn the 'save in file tags' on or of for each field in options>Library&Folders>manage library fields.

Hi,
I just looked at the Tools > Import ... > Configure Auto-Import > Next
I found the 'Update for external changes' and reading the wiki it sounds like this will update my MC library with changes made in the files.
Did I read this correctly or did I miss something?
Thanks,

I have spent a lot of time setting up my file tags just the way I want them. I do not want JRiver to write over my hard work.

Do you know a way to turn off updating files for all libraries or must this be done for each Library field?

Thanks, Chip

I believe the option to turn off all tag writing is:

Tools > Options > General > Importing & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes > (uncheck)

Last question on this subject.

Which field does JRiver use?
Album Artist
or
AlbumArtist

If I look at Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields
I can see and entry for 'Album Artist' with a Name = 'Album Artist' which I understand is the field to be used in the square brackets = [Album Artist]
and then I see under 'Search keywords: albumarstist=' without the space.

With or without the space? Which tag is used in JRiver MC21?

AlbumArtist

[Album Artist]  (I'm just using the square brackets as notation, the field name is Album Artist .)

Good question. It's Album Artist (with the space).  That "search keywords" entry is a shortcut that can be used to SEARCH that field using the search box.  So if you wanted to find everything with an album artist of Bob Dylan, you could type:

albumartist="Bob Dylan"

in the search box (in the main library interface) and it would match on ONLY the Album Artist field.
