Media Center 9.1.229 beta available
« on: August 11, 2003, 01:59:17 pm »

Please read VERY carefully. This is a BETA version of 9.1.  If you expect things to work, please download the latest 9.0 build from this thread:

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=di splay;num=1054751628

but if you're patient and willing to help us work out some of the bugs, you can download 9.1 here:

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter91229.exe

(backup your library before installing)

Please report any 9.1 problems in this thread.  Keep a list of problems and if they aren't fixed in the next build, please post the list again.

History:
1. Fixed: Unprotected WMA files could not be burned to CD.
2. Fixed: Sorting would not always be saved when selecting "Save View."
3. Fixed: Player controls are almost in the same place they were before.
4. Fixed: Splitter bars were not using correct colors.
5. Fixed: Main window would not resize correctly if one of the borders was used for resizing.
6. Changed: Menus smarter about not covering up toolbar buttons when they go up instead of down.
7. Changed: Continued reworking "Action Window".

Do you guys want us to start reporting bugs again or is it still too early for that?

Right click doesn't seem to be working on files anywhere, now.

And the auto-resizing of the action window is really annoying. Especially if you're trying to use that refresh button to switch between the different views. And since that appears to currently be the only way to get to the Image tab (and since right click isn't working the Image tools) it's really painful to use.

Ok, scratch that whole bit about having to use the refresh button to switch... I figured it out.

Autoresize is still kind of obnoxious, though. Simply because the controls keep moving on you. If they were at the bottom, this could be avoided.

Right-clicking wasn't working for me at first either but now it is.  Not sure what I did.  Either clicked out of MC then back into it or I started playing some MP3s.

If you reported the bug in a previous build, don't report it for this one.  We're still behind.

Action Window still isn't finished.

I am starting to really like the Action Window.  It seems a lot better now that it's been cleaned up.   It seems a little jumpy (maybe one day it could slide smoothly up and down).  I like the direction you're going with it though.

Also, thank God the stop button is back.

Action pane (er... Jafar, :)) is very nice; it would have been hard to describe without seeing it, but I like the direction it seems to be going.  The fact that it can show the "playing now" is nice, but being able to float it too!  Woot!  It's fan tast ic.

Location of the <search here> bar makes 5000% more sense now, good show.

Minor bug:  icons on the "add playlist group" and "add smartlist" buttons are backwards.

The new ACTIONS window seems to be improving.

It seems that your current design is limited by the small size of the window .. and therefore cannot have buttons or tabs, etc . which aid in the navigation.  The above illustration shows that a sindow-wide pane allows for Settings, Tabbed interfaces, etc to be used helping users quite a bit ...

I have a big problem using the new Properties Detailed Info section as when I view ALL fields, they are no longer grouped making it really tough to navigate.

Search bar does make more sense -- Good decision.
Can you make the Track Position indicator actually centered on the line it seems a little low ..
Thank you for putting STOP back :)

Like the new "interacting" between the tree on the left and the panes. This is really new and needs some time to be explored. Love the idea so far.

By the way, it's great to see one thumbnail per song when you need it. But in "Albums (grouped)" I expect to see one thumbnail per album...

I won't change back to 1.9.226 again.

Great step!

Everytime I close MC it generates an error after the interface disappears.

Besides having no right-click, Ctrl-A does not work either

Some quick comments:

-Action Window is looking much better. Great!

-New link menu should be exported anywhere where you used the old semi-toolbar (changing visualizations is not obvious)

-Setting a playlist as a DDG target does not show the track's list. It just show a big a meaning less picture. Should show tracks?

-Albums thumnails is not working. Hopefully, it should work also for playlists.

-Right click does not work to me.

-System info is not working

-Locate on disc (external) does not work

-I think Action Window can have buttons.

-I keep wondering what the hell were you thinking when rearrenged the top buttons and info panel...

And I think that's all. Not bad, not bad...  ;)

If you have MINOR suggestions for how to improve the current user interface, please post them here.

I've removed a couple of posts that were discussions of alternate interfaces.  If you want to discuss that, please use one of the existing open threads on the subject.

As I said earlier today, there will be no MAJOR user suggestions implemented now in the user interface.  We may make some of our own in order to make it all work better.

Hi.  This is my old request.  I wanted to have repeat, random, and dsp button at left side.  It looks like MC9.1 is trying to modify apperance, so I'm trying to bump my request again.  ;)

How about this placement?  Original size is at http://www.io.com/~kazushi/mc/menu.png

I think users will use the "refresh" button only one time to see what it's for - and never again... there are too many items to toggle ;)

How about an arrow to hide/show the "action window" instead?

Example: http://www.futurehome.de/mc/actionwindow.gif

Note: The "indicator text" does not change to "none" (as it's now) but still shows the current content when the "action window" is hidden.

Couple of littlies:

Space next to transport controls looks a bit wasted.  Think it was better when transport was left aligned...

Sometimes the action window auto sizes very samll when you would prefer it to be large.  Example: Using the playing now view and Media library.  If playing now is clear then the action window is very small...makes it a very small drop target.  would be easier if it was larger or if we could dictate the size.

The graphics at the top still do not look as "clean" as they did.  Not sure if this is cos it is still a WIP...  top bar looks too close to the library...sliders aren't following the center of the line, they appear slightly below...lots of square edges now that could do with being rounded to fit in with the rest of the theme.

Playlists option in properties section of action window does not allow groups to be opened.  eg Auto Smartlists (music) is a single item you cannot select the smartlists below it...

The biggest thing I can think of at the moment to improve the action window would be to allow the auto sizing to be overidden eg to lock it at a particula height for certain tasks...shouldn't be too radical but would make certain tasks a lot more practical...

I'd suggest a title bar (How about "Dynamic something or other") with a down triangle on the left when the window is open...  that turns to a right triangle when the window is closed.  Lots of applications use this model - Macromedia Dreamweaver is just the first that comes to mind.

If I were smart enough, I'd do a dynamic gif to explain...  but I'm not!  If you can't imagine it, or look at Dreamweaver, let me know and I'll do a few screen-captures.

This build is great..
the only thing that bugs me really...the playerbar.
i mean what a new unorganized player interface that even may get skinners that want to change some look in the playerbar via skinning to stop working on skinning for real!...

the left/right spaces behind the player controls and the borders is not suitable with the bottom part of MC (media liberary and etc stuff...)

take a look of the new advantages of this new playerbar:
http://www.netspaceonline.net/netspace/tomy00/playerbar.jpg

if you look on the right you see the playerwindow is getting to the right too long

and we need more space in the bottom of the player controls..

well.. i think the playerbar is not arranged so much..

anyone think so ?

So far it's looking good.

Since MC now has the concept of PlayingNow in the window under the tree, how about extending that a bit to show either the playing now track list or the current playing image?  It fits right there with showing the playing now track list.

It took me a bit to realize what the "toggle" button does (why do you call it a "refresh" button?)...  it's too hard to toggle because it jumps around, what with the action window auto-resizing.

Is there a way to manually select the "action"?

Mmh, because the icon is used for "Refresh" in other places of the application?

Yeah, another reason why users will avoid using it ;)

Don't you get a pull down menu (Hoover > click on "indicator text" (right word for that?)) or do you mean keyboard short cuts?

The jumpiness should get fixed tomorrow.  An hour glass should get added when it's slow, too.

Hey guys- great build.  I do have one request however.  Is it possible to include the newer Remoteserver.dll that Ben has written?  Every time I download a new beta, I have to manually put that file in.  Is there a reason it has been left at the old dll?  If so, sorry about that.

thanks,
Dan

1) No album thumbnails view (already mentioned above)

2) I'm finding issue toggling the main Media Center window size using the Windows "restore down" and "maximize" buttons, at least with the current Brushed Metal screen.  Maximizing the window only makes it fill approximately half the screen; exit and restart to bring it back to full size.

3) Using Tab to toggle between the tree and panes instead toggles between the tree and the search box.  For those of us using remote controls to navigate the pane structure, the previous behavior is probably better because you can navigate both tree and panels with nothing but arrow, enter and tab keys.

Thanks for letting me burn WMA's again!

One request: as you're putting your creative energies into the action window, I would ask that you keep in mind those of us using 800x600 displays.  Currently, it shows just enough information to remain functional at this relatively low resolution - thanks!  I hope it stays that way.

One more request: a toolbar button for Clear Playlist!

Take care,

-Doug

I'm not sure if this is minor or major (since I'm not privy to the source code), but how about showing a track listing in the Action Window for the user-defined playlists/smartlists like you do (now) for the Playing Now playlist?

As it stands now, all one sees is a track count, total duration, and a placeholder pic.   Is this by design, or is just one of those "work in progress" things?

This also applies to the "Burn CD" mode of the Action Window--haven't tried it on this build, but before, it just showed the count and duration, not the actual tracks queued to burn.

Again, if this is just a "work in progress" thing, forgive me for bringing it up.

1)Dragging the scroll bar in the options menu changes the appearance of the scroll bar from MC skin style to the default windows style and back, making scrolling very jerky.  This bug has been there forever!

2)When one uses ASIO for streaming web content, switching stations causes stuttering and occasionally crashes.

3) MC downloads *.rm files instead of streaming them
This is an old bug.

3) I also liked selective text for tool bar buttons.

I'm suffered serious slowdowns the first time I tried running .229. Listing the media library and resizing the panes-filelist splitter froze the program for 30 seconds +. This only occurred the first time I ran the program and did this, now it works fine (but general operation seems to be slower)

.228 and .226 didn't have these problems.

I can't give you my system information cut-n-paste because if I do Help > System Info, I get a "An invalid arguement was encountered" error.  I'm running WinXP in a 1.3ghz pentium. My media library here at work isn't particularly big. HTH.

It may be building thumbnails.  Disable or uninstall any plug-ins you can.

Try a search here in the last 30 days.  Someone else had a similar problem and I think it turned out to be some other software or OS thing.  I don't remember.  It was about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Start a new thread on this if you need more help.
