Playing 16/24 bit FLAC files on iPhone
« on: June 05, 2016, 07:50:54 pm »

Hello. I'm sure this has been answered before, but when playing lossless FLAC files (no transcoding) on an iPhone does it play it in true lossless format? I imagine it converts it to 16 bit Apple Lossless? Regarding 24 bit FLAC files, even though it says "24/96" on the iPhone is it actually outputting 24/96 Apple Lossless (converted)?

I do think it sounds great through the lightning cable into my Kenwood Excelon car stereo and through the headphone out to my Sennheiser headphones.

Any info is appreciated. I do love the JRemote app so!

It is not converting to Apple lossless.it is just playing the track.

Thanks! Just wasn't sure the built-in DAC inside the iPhone 6s could output the FLAC files without any conversion.

Appreciate the input.

The DAC in your iPhone isn't handling the files. Lightning only outputs digital audio.

I have one more question. Using the JRemote App, what's the difference between streaming 16bit FLAC and 24bit FLAC Hi-Res audio (which isn't stored on the Iphone but my home network) and the Onkyo HF Player app which plays Hi-Res files that are stored on your Iphone?

What's the difference in quality? I should also note that these are output via the lightning to USB cable into AudioQuest Jitterbug into Dragonfly Red DAC.

It seems pointless to use the Onkyo HF Player app if you can stream from JRemote in the same quality - minus the data overages of course.

Thanks,
Spence

What's the difference in quality?

Try it. Listen. Tell us your findings please...

Will do. I'm thinking I'm not the first one who's asked this question?  ;)

Has there been testing to prove that JRemote outputs bit for bit for all resolutions with transcoding turned off? I'll try and run some tests soon with the 2 apps.

Thanks,
Spence

P.S. I think JRemote is the greatest app ever invented!
