SMSL M8 DAC DSD ASIO/WASAPI Question
« on: July 04, 2016, 11:48:10 am »

I am new to computer audio.
I just bought a SMSL M8 DAC.
I installed JRiver MC 21 on a Windows 7 notebook.
I also installed ASIO4All.
Bitstreaming is set to DSD.
I can play DSD fine with WASAPI audio device and the DAC correctly displays DSD64 on its screen.
However I can not play the DSD files if I choose ASIO as audio device.
If I choose ASIO, I get the warning "Playback could not be started on the output "ASIO" using the format "DSD 2.8MHz 2 ch."
Enabling "DSD bitstream in DoP format" does not help, I get the same warning.
Is it normal I can not play DSD over ASIO?
Any tips?

I am using a Meridian Explorer 2, MQA enabled. Is there anyway for an MQA encoded file (specially samples from the  2L test bench site) to pass through jriver so as to be able to decode the MQA file? Someone previously offered a suggestion but I cannot locate their response. Meridian said that no computer program can pass the MQA signal unaltered but I have read things to the contrary. Would appreciate some help with this as I am new to computer audio. I am using the most recent version of jriver.

MQA is not supported.

For DSD, read about bitstreaming on the wiki.  ASIO4all is just Kernel Streaming.  It's not recommended.
